Fifth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Morning

Last night, something peculiar had happened for the very first time: Jeremy Darling had gone grocery shopping.

And as was the case with most things involving money and a member of the Darling family, he had maybe gone a little overboard. He'd ended up having to lug three bags of foodstuffs back to the dorms, on his own, and dearly wishing Clark could have moved to Fandom with the twins to help with this stuff.

Still, the good thing was that he had three different kinds of cereal to choose from this morning when he wandered on down to the common room, wearing his glasses and his pajama bottoms with the planet print, his red silk dressing gown hanging open. After making his daunting breakfast food choice, he flopped down onto a couch with his bowl of cereal (two kinds at the same time) and turned the television on to start channel surfing.

It wasn't long before he was considering buying the common room a nice new TV set.

It just sounded polite to Jeremy. Oh, he'd learn eventually.

"Thanks," he beamed, right before frowning some after processing what else the boy had said. "Wait, sorry, what was your name?"

Because he couldn't have heard that right.

"Nobody," he repeated, chuckling under his breath. He was able to find a bottle of water easily and came back to take a seat in an empty spot. "I go by Bod for short, if that helps."

"Huh." Well, Jeremy's own last name was an adjective overused by diva-like people and certain British comediennes in their finest work, so he really shouldn't have judged, but he was still mildly taken aback. "Bod. Okay."

Really, he wasn't sure that was much better.

"It's unusual, I know," Bod said, still amused by Jeremy's reaction to his name. "You can call me Owens, if that would help. My parents were a bit unusual so I received an unusual name. I've grown into it but some people are still taken aback."

"I'm sure I'll get used to it," Jeremy decided. He was easy like that. "So, have you been here long, Bod?"

See? Used to it. Or just equipped with adequate social skills.

Bod wasn't sure if Jeremy was telling the truth or just trying to be nice but he didn't question it either way.

"Over a year now," he said and blinked at that. He hadn't realized it'd been that long. "Before that, I was in England for most of my life so it's been a bit of a culture shock to say the least."

Jeremy nodded a few times in agreement. "I just came down from New York and it's been trippy." To say the least, and he was even yet to see any of the hardcore weirdness. "Has it been a good year? Because so far this place seems a little quiet."

Which was an understatement since he'd grown up in Manhattan.

"Overall, it hasn't been a terrible year, no," Bod said, shaking his head. "I've had some good times and some bad times and some really horrible times but what person doesn't? It's all a part of life so I'm willing to take what comes and deal with as best I can."

He'd been employing that philosophy a lot lately. It'd finally started working, at least. "It's been an interesting year."

Well, Jeremy was satisfied enough with that answer, at least. "Sounds good enough," he nodded. "Maybe things'll start picking up for me too, I'm still just getting acclimated."

Sharing a room and having to buy stuff like breakfast foods himself was just something that took getting used to.

"You've found yourself bored thus far?" Bod wondered. "Or just out of sorts with the unfamiliarity?"

"Well, I'm a city guy," Jeremy said, leaning back and setting the remote down so he could pick up the half-eaten bowl of cereal from his lap. "I'm used to more space, and really just more everything. And no one recognizes me, that's just freaky."

"Why would they recognize you?" Bod wondered, frowning in confusion at that. "Are you famous for some reason?"

Jeremy was getting used to this, sadly. He sighed. "My family's pretty loaded. My dad's Tripp Darling, he owns most of New York."

"I've never heard the name, I'm sorry," Bod said, wincing. "I grew up in a graveyard and the biggest news there was which ghost was angry at which other ghost for whatever reason."

A graveyard was not a good place to get gossip about current events, sadly.

Uh, okay.

Jeremy really didn't hear a word Bod said after I grew up in a graveyard, so now he was just giving the other boy a very, very confused look.

"... Is living in a graveyard even legal?"

"Why wouldn't it be?" Bod asked easily, shrugging a shoulder. "Would you have even known that if I'd never said it? I mean, it's not obvious, is it?"

Yeah, Jeremy was going to just keeping on being confused.

"Well no, but... Who lives in a graveyard?"

Bod did, Jerms. Keep up.

"I did," Bod said, just in case Jeremy had forgotten. "My parents and sister were murdered when I was a baby and the spirits of those buried in that graveyard adopted me and kept me safe."

Bod was beginning to realize that he was maybe not the best person for new kids to meet almost immediately after arriving.

Yeah, this probably wasn't the best way to go about things.

"Murdered?"

And now Jeremy felt awkward and bad about still feeling extremely dubious and confused about the whole thing. It was too early for this stuff.

"I apologize," he said and blushed some at having been so easy with that term. "I was a baby when it happened so I didn't know them. I sometimes forget it can be a tricky subject when I talk about it. I can't really mourn people I don't know."

He'd just blame himself instead.

"... Right." Okay. Jeremy was going to just focus on the part he understood and could accept, which was that this guy had had it rough at some point in his life. "Sorry to hear that, dude."

"Perhaps I should be apologizing to you," Bod said, wincing. "I've told the story a few times now that I sometimes forget that some people aren't always ready for it. I'm not even the strangest person you'll meet either."

"I'm starting to think that," Jeremy replied, slowly. Could their dad have enrolled the twins in a special school of some kind? He couldn't have, could he?

He frowned. "My fake big brother did say something about that."

"Who were you assigned?" Bod asked curiously. "If he's mentioned that, you should probably listen because he's obviously not lying."

"Might be obvious to you, dude," Jeremy muttered half under his breath before actually answering the question. "Nico di Angelo."

Who had about the coolest name ever, but that was beside the point.
