The Roof, Monday Afternoon/Evening

The roof was the traditional place for brooding, and so, after the walls of her room had finally gotten stifling, that was where Karla had fled. As much as she hated to admit it, the weather was a bit of a draw as well; she wanted to rail and curse and demand gray skies and rainy days to match her mood, but she couldn't deny how nice the sun felt. It couldn't really lift her spirits, but they might have been slightly lighter after she'd been sitting out for awhile.

[Open like a roof, though warning for emo. It's likely that information about Raven will come out in conversation, so please let me know early on if this is not okay.]

"You mean where I fucked up and let myself get snatched by him in her mind?" Karla asked.

"If that's how you think it happened, yes," Ben said.

"That's exactly what happened," Karla argued, but without any heat. "I ran into Raven's room and saw she was in the middle of a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. So I dove into her dreamscape and it was covered in bones and terrifying, and then Trigon was there and scooped me up. Rather than running, Raven came out of hiding and basically...made a trade."

"So when you went into her room, you knew that she would trade herself for you to her father?" Ben replied.

"I didn't realize Trigon was there!" Karla protested. "That's how I got my stupid self caught. I didn't know he'd gotten so strong..."

"So you're holding yourself accountable based on information you didn't have access to at the time," Ben said. "That's not fair to you."

"But i should have figured it out and I didn't," Karla said. "I should have known something was wrong long before Dinah told me. But I got so wrapped up in Christmas...and then my Virgin Night...Hell's fire and Mother Night, Ben! Raven helped me and Warren through our Virgin Night and I still didn't realize something was wrong!"

Well, there was some information he hadn't gotten yet? Surprise?

Ben's fun little strangled noises probably confirmed that, yes. "You what?"

"Didn't realize anything was wrong," Karla repeated. Then realized that Ben's brain had probably stopped a few sentences sooner. "Oh. That. Ummm, I had my Virgin Night?"

"With three of you?"

Karla raised an eyebrow. "It makes sense if you think about it," she pointed out.

Go on, Ben. Think about it.

Ben's expression was kind of priceless as he did just that.

"Um."

It was at least a hot mental image, right? You know, before the brain-breaking?

"I've explained the, uhhh, difficulties surrounding my Virgin Night, right?"

"Not in a lot of detail, no," Ben flailed.

"Well, you know it's dangerous," Karla reminded. "That's why--Hobart--" Yeah, she just wasn't going to finish that train of thought. "Which is why for regular Virgin Nights, an older, gentle, experienced male is chosen to see the witch through it. So she comes out of it with her hymen broken and nothing more. I didn't really have a lot of older, experienced males clamoring to see me through mine, but Raven's a Healer and was able to take away the pain that might have sent me breaking through my inner web."

"And she couldn't do that from another room?" Ben asked as a small part of his brain screamed at him for asking.

"Not as well," Karla said. And then looked at him, a hint of mischief in her eyes. "You don't think it would be more awkward, having her act as voyeur than participant?"

Ben flailed. "I've never thought about it!"

Karla was pretty sure that wasn't true. Well, maybe not about her, Raven, and Warren, but a threesome in general? Bet he had.

She was also pretty sure that mentioning that out loud would get her a grumpy Ender, whenever the next time they talked was.

"Well, I think it would have been," she said instead. "I don't know, having her, like, holding my hand and telling Warren to shift a little to the left would have been more than just a bit uncomfortable."

Ben was coming dangerously close to being the first person ever to die of embarrassment.

"Maybe?" he squeaked.

Oh, Ben. She hadn't even started giving you details yet. Like--did you know it was almost possible for you eyes to roll up in the back of your head? Huh? Did you?

"The whole evening was very nice," she hastened to assure him. "I mean, the sex was better than just 'nice'--" it had been eye-rollingly, 'oh, Mother Nigh!'-ingly wonderful, "--but for something I'd been dreading for so long, it was remarkably enjoyable."

"Good?" Ben replied faintly. "I mean, for a first time, you're already light years ahead of me."

A small part of his brain was wondering how he ended up in these conversations.

Well, you start off by being friends with Karla and her weird boundaries...

"It's not going to a be reoccurring thing," she said quickly. "Just a one-night-only engagement."

And then realized how true that was. Raven would never be able to do anything again.

"Right," she said softly, feeling grief hit her anew.

Weirdness or not, Ben knew when a hug was called for, and he leaned in to give her one now. "I'm sorry," he said.

"I just don't understand," Karla said. "It doesn't make any sense. How could she be dead?!"
