With his one class over and done, Nathan found himself almost energetic. He didn't want to go laze around his room like he usually did and he didn't want to smoke near his window in his most sincere imitation of a hipster emo poet douchebag. He didn't (and wouldn't ever) have the beard or scarf for that.

He ended up in the common room because that was the next best thing to going into town. This little dinky island had absolutely no nightlife to speak of which was unbearably sad and needed to be changed. Of course, Nathan had no money and no drive to really change that but he'd perfectly happy to encourage someone with a round of applause should they take the initiative.

Nathan clicked on the television and then actually practiced jumping onto the couch. He wanted to see what positions he could contort his body into before landing. There was the flat on your back, flat on your stomach, stretched on your side, tuck 'n roll, ass down, and swan dive. Eventually, he stayed on his stomach, head pillowed on his arms while he watched whatever the fuck was on the television.

So much for his energy. He was fickle like that.

"And should I feel honored by your presence?" Nathan asked, looking back at her. "There's really no slumming going on here. There's you, taking up space on my personal couch and providing me candy but no slumming. You're telling lies with your words."

"So are you," she replied easily, as she was peeling the top off one of her pudding cups. "This isn't your personal couch."

"Yes, it is," he replied, stretching out and sighing. "It's my personal couch because I have called dibs on it and that makes it mine. It's certainly not yours."

"No, it's the school's," she said, shaking her head. "Or, if your logic works, then this little part I'm sitting on is mine, not yours."

"What if I kicked out off my couch?" Nathan asked, smirking. "Would you be all mad and shrieky if you landed on your ass after I evict you from my personal piece of furniture?"

"I would claw your eyes out with my ferocious nails," Kate informed him evenly, holding up a hand to demonstrate them. Said nails were an electric blue, freshly painted. "So don't."

"And that's really supposed to deter me?" Nathan asked, finding nothing wrong with a girl trying to manhandle him. "I've already been punched in the eye this week by a girl. I think that illustrates that I can handle a little pain from distraught girls who can't manage to one up me."

Yeah, Kate didn't really listen to him past that one point wherr her eyebrows bounced. "You got punched by a girl?" she asked, probably sounding too amused at the idea. "Who?"

Really, at this school it could have been anyone.

"You know, I don't even fucking know her name but she took exception to me innocently completely the classroom assignment," Nathan said as if anything he did was innocent. Yeah, right.

"So, you said something incredibly offensive," Kate translated, nodding, "and she punched you in the face. I'd guess this isn't even the first time that's happened to you."

"It was within the bounds of the assignment," Nathan told her, rolling his eyes. "It's not my fault some people here just can't handle shit. They all need to grown a thicker skin. The real world is a cruel, harsh mistress. I'm a saint compared to some people."

"Uh huh," Kate replied around a spoonful of pudding. "So what was the assignment anyway, St. Nathan?"

"We had to chat about other ways to enjoy each other sexually that doesn't involve penetration and I suggested to my partner that she seemed like someone who enjoys spankings and letting men come on her," he shared, sounding about as innocent as he could. "See, there was no reason to hit me."

Kate laughed, then shook her head, much like you would at a tiny child who simply didn't know better.

"Oh, Nathan," she said. "You so got what was coming to you."

"Wrong! I followed the assignment. I did nothing wrong. I even got complimented for my inventiveness." Okay, Caroline had just agreed that it was inventive but he took it as a compliment. "I did not have that coming to me. No one gets to abuse me."

Kate raised her eyebrows again. "Yeah I doubt the assignment called for you guessing at what this chick was personally looking for in bed," she said. "You can't have expected her to take kindly to that."

"I was taking the initiative," Nathan answered, rolling his eyes. "Honestly, I should have been applauded and praised, not punched. She was just lucky she didn't do permanent damage to my beautiful eyes."

"You're lucky you didn't get reprimanded for sexual harassment," she retorted, looking his face over. "And that she didn't do more damage. I'm pretty sure some girls here could kill you with their pinkie, and not even break a nail doing it."

"As long as someone's worthy of her hate, Caroline said she'd help me out," Nathan shared, smirking smugly. Look, hearing that was kind of cool especially since he knew Caroline had those special abilities.

"So, I got some backup," he shared, nodding. "I'd love to see her take someone's face off with the heel of one of her boots. She's got like fifty of them."

Kate rolled her eyes at the mention of Caroline, but at least she was feeling mellow enough today to not actually make a face.

"Well, it's nice that you have a bodyguard," she said instead, scraping the bottom of the pudding cup with her spoon. "You need one."

"Why do you hate my roommate so much, Kate?" Nathan asked, completely amused by her continued reactions at the mention of Caroline. "It can't just be the 'fucking your ex' thing. It's not like he's pouting because you're dating some rich douche."

Kate resisted another eyerol, and suppressed a sigh. Instead, she slanted a somewhat impassive glance his way. "Can we not talk about her?"

"Well, she's my roommate." And his friend and he kind of cared about her, shhh. "It's hard not to mention her sometimes especially when she's relevant to the conversation at hand. Though, I wouldn't consider her a bodyguard. More like...a concerned party. She wouldn't want to lose the roommate she adores."

Caroline probably didn't adore him. Nathan thought it was a matter of time.

"Mmhm," Kate agreed, vaguely, eyes on the cup. "Well, you are adorable."

And she might have been saying that just to distract him onto another subject.

"You think I'm adorable?" Nathan asked, pleased but perhaps a little skeptical. Girls didn't tend to just come out with that.
