Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Evening

Wesley felt a little silly, entertaining his bratty child in the common room with board games that she seemed irrationally talented at. Honestly, what nine-year-old could beat a trained and experienced Watcher at Scrabble? He was positive that she was making the words up, but every time he consulted a dictionary, all he saw was Eloise's smug little face smirking at -- sure enough -- the word in question printed right there on the page.

Smug brat.

"She was just upset when one of 'em was permnint and I went to school the next day 'cause it said 'Hope you get better!' and I was fine so my teacher didn't get it and it was confusing for her," Henry admitted.

"And I bet that was a fun one to get out of." Kennedy perched on the arm of the sofa, and it hit her that she really was worn out keeping up with the kids all day; sitting down felt absurdly good. "Trust me, you're better off without the cast. Those things itch. I fell off the slide once when I was nine and broke my arm, only I didn't really have magic healing hookups so I had to deal with the cast and it was all gross afterward."

"It was itchy?" he asked, interested in this detail as only a five year-old boy could be. "How'd you scratch it? Could you scratch it?"

"The annoying part," Kennedy told him, "is how it always itches the worst, like, right past where you can reach if you stick a pen in there-- which you shouldn't be doing anyway," she added quickly, "though probably a moot point for you with Aunt Raven around."

"You can fit a pen in there?" he asked, amazed. "What color was your cast? Did people write on it? What kinda slide was it?"
brat_inslayage: (Um. Oops? (Empty Places))

"Okay, let's just forget about the pen thing!" Kennedy exclaimed. Backpedal, Kennedy. Backpedal like the wind! "It was a totally boring white cast, and yeah, I made everybody write on it."

She'd also threatened to hit a couple of hapless kids over the head with it if they didn't sign her cast, but she was starting to get the idea that telling these things to impressionable youngsters was of the bad.

"The slide, though-- it was one of the cool spirally ones." She grinned at him. "It was blue and yellow."

"Those are my favorite colors!" Henry told her excitedly, bouncing. Henry had a lot of favorite colors, okay? Except pink. That was for girls. "When it was my birthday my mama made me a cake and it was yellow onna inside and on the outside the frosting was blue and it made my mouth blue!"

"And you ran around showing everybody, right?" Kennedy would never put it past a kid of Bobby's to do that.

...also, she would've, too.

"I showed you and then you got some blue cake and we were blue twins," he told her proudly.

Kennedy held up a hand for a high five. "Because we're both awesome like that?" she suggested.

Never mind that it wasn't a badass sort of thing to do. It sounded like fun.

"'Course!" he said happily. "Mama and Aunt Emma didn't wanna be blue twins though, but Daddy did it too! And Aunt Karla!"

...someone didn't understand what 'twins' meant, no.

"Of course they did," and Kennedy, despite being unexpectedly saddled with actual twins this weekend, wasn't going to correct him on that point. "You got a really, really big birthday party. Right?"

[identity profile] liliceflakes.livejournal.com 2011-02-13 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah 'cause five is old so it was 'portant so everyone came," he said happily. "There was a castle to bounce around in!"

Meanwhile, back in Gotham City, Stephanie Brown had the random thought that she approved of bouncy castles, and no idea why.

"A fifth birthday without bouncy castles isn't right. So good on your mom and dad for having that covered," Kennedy decided.
