The Roof, Thursday Evening

It had been an uneventful trip home, for the most part: a thorough debriefing on everything she'd observed and learned about in Fandom so far, complete with the expected stinging critique of what she could have done better, but much to Stephanie's disappointment not even one little brief and boring patrol. So uneventful, for the most part, except for getting to catch up with Cass, and then the fight she'd had with Tim that had started with her calling him on not being happy that she hadn't quit being Robin yet and ended with what she was pretty sure was a breakup. Oops. So much for a good Valentine's Day. (She could have felt worse about it, but really, if he couldn't be happy for her . . .)

She'd gotten back to Fandom just before nightfall, and spent a couple of hours putting away her clean laundry and carefully stashing all the treats Alfred had sent along, then headed on up here.

She wasn't really brooding; Steph didn't do brooding. That was the big guy's job, and part of hers was to balance that out. It was just that everything was a little simpler when you were hanging out on a rooftop under the cover of night, in costume or out of it. And, she thought, legs dangling idly over the edge of the building, it was a pretty nice night.

"That should always be one of your goals," Ben decided.

"It was a concern for a few minutes there, but my math was correct," Tony replied proudly.

"Except for how you're practically sizzling up here on the roof," Ben exaggerated.

"Exploding was the other option," Tony reminded him. "And I got to test the additions I made to the shielding systems this weekend."

While he hid from the kids.

"You didn't have visitors this weekend?" Ben asked.

"Luckily no. I just stayed in the lab until the radio said it was all over."

"It wasn't so bad," Ben said. "Normally it happens around prom, so this year was kind of a surprise."

"...I'm never going to get used to this place, am I?"

"There's a rhythm," Ben said, "it's just not really a normal one. Sometimes we all wake up as children, or as other people or as girls..."

"But we get better!" Ben added belatedly.

"I would hope so!"

"And most of the time it's just a little weird, and not overly traumatic," Ben added.

"I think turning into a girl would be pretty traumatic." Yes. Traumatic.

He was saying this to Ben 'TRAUMA TRAUMA TRAUMA' Skywalker.

"More so when your girlfriend turns into a boy," Ben replied.

"...and when does this happen?"

"About once a year or so?" Ben said.

Tony nodded slowly. "I'll just keep an eye out for that."

"It's easy enough to do," Ben said. "If a bunch of grumpy strangers are sitting in a common room and it's not a welcome picnic weekend, the island's gone nuts again."

"So, hide in the lab. Gotcha."

Ben snickered. "Is that your default option?" he asked.

He whose default was "ignore it" or "eat ice cream" should hush.

"It's a secure location where I won't get bored." And had Hot Pockets.

But ice cream would be good too!

"Or bothered," Ben said thoughtfully. "I should work on upgrading my shuttle for that."

Because having a place to hide was just what Ben needed!

"What's the point of having something astral if you can't tweak it a bit, right?" Ben replied.
