When she came into the common room Friday night, Quinn hadn't expected more of it than maybe a movie or a bad TV show and some distraction to fill the time until they had to leave for Hawaii.

She could probably have watched a bad TV show, but she was temporarily waylaid by the dozens of boxes of Rice Krispies covering every surface.

"Fantastic," she said. "Somebody had a craving and didn't clean up."

And then, well, there was nothing to do but start poking through the cabinets for marshmallows to make some snacks. It was either that or start checking behind the couch for elves.

Quinn wasn't quite paranoid enough to think she heard giggling.

"I'm not sure I've ever had cold cereal," Rilla admitted. "Perhaps I should try it before moving it all into my room."

"Get a bowl," Quinn said, waving a hand to the cabinet. "If you hate it, there's plenty. It's better with lots of really cold milk and a little sugar."

She added, "So it's not really a thing yet, where you're from?"

"We have a housekeeper who cooks," Rilla said, sounding faintly embarrassed. "She'd be horrified if we didn't have a hot meal three times a day."

"See, I'm half jealous and half kind of glad nobody cared that much about what I ate," Quinn said. "But it sounds ... protected."

"Perhaps a bit," Rilla admitted. "She sends me baskets of baked goods every week. She's quite convinced no one in this entire country can cook."
