The Deck - Friday Lunchtime

Jack was a fan of summer, but today was plain hot and that he had issues with. But he was a guy to take advantage of a situation like this. He had deck chairs, an umbrella and a cooler full of ice and cans of soda for anyone who came by. Jack was happy with the view from here and didn't plan on going anywhere until the sun went down some and the temperatures cooled off.

After his class earlier, Bod had gone into town to pick up a few things for Kate's party later on. He was just now making his way back to the dorms and decided to stop off on the deck to enjoy the warmth.

"You certainly look comfortable," he said, giving Jack a wave. "Fan of Egypt or a fan of the heat?"

"I'm a fan of sitting in the shade and staying out of Egypt and the heat," Jack replied with a smile. "Drink?"

"Please," Bod said and took a seat himself, settling the bags beside him and stretching out. "This heat is quite fierce especially considering we were just in Iceland where this...was not happening at all."

That was an understatement. "I wonder if there's such a thing as climate shock."

"There is," Jack assured him. "There definitely is. I'm ready to melt. Normally there's some warning before summer hits, but going from Iceland to this?"

"If the island can laugh, I'm sure it is," Bod said and then frowned while he pictured the island with a mouth somewhere. That was just...a weird image. He shook it off. "Have you been into Egypt yet? It's massive."

Jack shook his head. "Bobby will probably want to check it out. Have to make sure he doesn't get lost or end up buried in one of the pyramids. Doesn't this freak you out? It's Egypt right out there, not even modern Egypt. A short walk and you're wandering around in history." He may have thought about this too hard while looking at the view this week.

"I..." Bod paused and thought about it. "You know, considering some of the other things that have occurred while I've been here, I don't think I'd even list this in my top ten of strange island happenings. It's definitely unique and unexpected but it's also proven to be quite exhilarating. I've always wanted to travel and where else would I get to actually time travel?"

"You sound like Bobby," he said not unkindly. "Everything is an adventure."

Bod chuckled and didn't disagree. "I prefer to see it as an opportunity that would be exceptionally ridiculous to pass up. When might I get to walk around in history again? I came from a very isolated place and haven't really gotten to stretch my legs, so to speak, until just recently. I'm taking advantage."

"What are you going to do in Egypt?"

"I'm not sure yet, actually," he said and laughed. "Today's mostly a day for Kate's party so I'm sure I'll get off island and into Egypt tomorrow. Perhaps I'll get myself purposefully lost so I can spend all day finding my way back and exploring along the way. It's not the first time I've done that in a new place."

"That's not a bad way to explore. Though it's easier if you can catch a cab home if you get really lost. There's a party today?"

"Kate's throwing a third floor party but everyone's invited," he replied, nodding. "It's at the beach later on tonight. I'm helping her in that I'm carrying the heavy items and helping her set up. You should definitely come. It'll be another way to enjoy the shade since the sun will be down."

Bobby considered his brother doubtfully. "Wouldn't the whole 'cooling off' thing work better at the beach?"

"There's a breeze up here too."

"You're expecting it to only from from specific directions though," Bobby pointed out. "The dorms building could be blocking the breeze."

"The breeze wouldn't be so great on the beach if it was coming across the island first."

"It'd be better than nothing," he observed then perked up. "Ooh! Guess what! Mr. Win - Sam - he made me his TA!"

"He has you calling him Sam?"

Bobby flailed. "He said to! He's really young for a teacher. I looked in the yearbooks and he graduated here last year." He paused. "Don't tell Mom."

Really, that last part could go completely unspoken by now.

"Hey, if he said to call him Sam, you do what he says. It's weird hearing you call a teacher by his name, that's all. What class are you TAing for?"

"It's weird calling them that. Miss Solo always said to call her by her first name, but she was old so I didn't," Bobby shared. He grinned. "Computers! I was a little disappointed by the class first cause it's mostly kids who are from before computers or whatever, but now I get to do this! What about you? Do you like your new classes? I liked kayaking on Monday."

"Monday's class is pretty cool," Jack agreed. "Not sure about the teacher. I keep waiting for him to spring a 10 mile hike on us. The other two are definitely summer camp type classes. Surfing and circus. They'll be fun."

Bobby looked a little worried at the comment. "Do you really think he'd make us do that? That could be bad in the heat. I don't know if I could hike ten miles."

"Depends on the terrain. You could make it if you paced yourself and it wasn't too rough."
