Main Campfire [evening]

As Rilla was practically fifteen right now, she felt quite grown-up enough to attempt to light the campfire by herself and managed without setting anything other than the kindling ablaze. In a long-ish skirt and multiple layers, this was a trickier business than you might imagine.

She settled herself onto a comfortable log, stared starry-eyed into the campfire (it reminded her of good times with her family on the shore when they burned all of the debris that washed up over the winter) and began singing a Scottish air from home.

Her voice was surprisingly good for someone who wasn't prone to singing in public, but around a campfire, such a thing was expected along with ghost stories and toasted bread.

She'd provide the bread if someone else had ghost stories.

"Ghost stories are traditional around a fire, but I'm not that choosy," Rilla said, settling in against her log.

"I... actually can't think of any ghost stories. Unfortunately, I didn't come from a very haunted town," Dave said. "And the scariest story I have is the one that happened a couple weekends ago, and that's still a little too traumatic for my tastes."

"About the only non-traumatic story I have off the top of my head is the plot to Space Battles."

"Space Battles?" Rilla repeated. "I don't think I've seen it. I have seen the Justin Bieber film. Is it like that?"

"I... don't actually know. Who's Justin Bieber?" Dave asked.

"A very famous Canadian singer who would be quite cute if he would move the hair from his eyes," Rilla declared. "He and his evil monkey companion had a road trip across the the West fighting crime and doing dance moves."

"I don't know anything about that," Dave said immediately in an attempt to sound as un-Canadian as possible. "Wait, why is an evil monkey fighting crime?"

"He was playing a rather duplicitous game," Rilla said. "I believe he was blackmailed, but I won't know for certain until the sequel."

"I can't even imagine how someone would blackmail a monkey," Dave noted. "Do they just refuse to give him bananas unless he plays along?"

"I think they kidnapped his monkey family," Rilla said. "But it's hard to discover kinship among monkeys on a screen."

"...Was there evidence that his monkey family had been kidnapped, or is that just the only reasonable explanation?" Dave asked.

"I think it's the only reasonable explanation," Rilla said. "That part of the movie was in French and I was busy with my popcorn and didn't catch all of the intricacies."

"The monkey didn't speak French, did he?" Dave asked, quite reasonably.

Rilla nodded. "He was from Quebec."

"Not that being able to talk is common with Quebec monkeys, right?" Dave said, looking for some clarification.

"Not that I'm aware of," Rilla said. "I didn't even know there were monkeys that came from Quebec, really."

"There's a zoo somewhere there, right?" Dave asked. "That might explain it."

"I think so," Rilla said. "I've never been."

"Yeah, neither have I," Dave said. "Still, if we're going to go ahead and say a talking monkey's family was kidnapped for blackmail, we might as well say that he came from a zoo in Quebec. Nobody's going to ding us for that kind of assumption."

"I think that makes more sense than most of the movie did," Rilla admitted with a little laugh.
