2nd Floor Common Room | Tuesday Evening

Jim's hearing was just now starting to come back. That was an exaggeration but he'd swear up and down that the early morning fire drill had caused permanent damage to his hearing and he should be assigned a personal assistant (preferably a very pretty, very female one) just to help him through the rough times.

But, he figured that request would be turned down since the school probably spent their entire budget on free food. Jim would take that trade off. He was a fan of free food and he wasn't shy about that.

His trip to the common room this week had yielded some pasta dish that he'd found in the refrigerator (and managed to heat up without starting a fire) and some documentary about mobsters.

It wasn't Cactibear but what was?

Wandering out of her room to get a bottle of water from the fridge, Stacey couldn't say she was sorry to see who beat her in here. "Hey," she smiled. "Is this your floor too, or are you just visiting?"

You know, so she could stalk appropriately.

"Now, would I be making myself as at home as I look right now on any other floor but mine?"

The answer to that question was yes.

"I've got my feet on the table and everything," he said, gesturing to his feet. "I think you can guess that this is my floor."

"You could just be one of those people who can be comfortable anywhere you go," she pointed out.

"Okay, that is true, I can definitely do that," he admitted with a nod. "But, today, you have caught me being comfortable on my own floor. I'm in 222. If you ever come by and I'm not there, you can keep yourself entertained by viewing Jackson's large collection of man jewelry."

Did Jackson have any jewelry? Probably not but that wouldn't stop Jim.

"I'll remember that. And I'm in 205, in case you ever want to say hi or need anything." Sigh, Stacey. "Is that your roommate?"

"Yeah. He's not so bad when you get to know him." He wasn't any better if you got to know him. "But, you're in 205, huh? That's not too far from me, you know. Why haven't we discovered that before now?"

"Probably because it's only been a week and we don't know that much about each other yet?" she suggested.

"Sure, be logical about it," Jim chuckled, dismissing that statement with a hand wave. "Guessing your appearance here in front of me tonight means you made it through that fire drill okay."

And he was so sorry to miss her in whatever she might have worn to bed.

"I did! My sleep clothes are still waterlogged, though." There, have that mental image for free. "It's too bad I didn't see you."

Because pretty.

That mental image, so generously give, made him smile in thanks.

"It really is too bad," Jim agreed with a nod. "I'm pretty sure my shorts are gonna take about a week to completely dry out. But, I've got other pairs so that's not a huge deal. I was pretty sure I was gonna be deaf for awhile there."

He rubbed his ear again even if it wasn't hurting anymore.

"It's almost like they made it extra obnoxious on purpose," she mused.

"It did seem that way," he agreed before giving his ear another rub and then dropping his hand. His ears were fine. "Besides, I am sure there are much better ways for me to see what you might wear at night besides a fire drill."

Unashamed, that's right.

Well, that was bolder than she was used to. And there was that part of her that sort of wanted to be sure they were on the same page here because wow, mix-ups would be embarrassing. "Like what?"

"Hello," Anna said when she drifted into the common room and found someone else already there. "What are you watching?"

"Some profile on some mobster that apparently terrorized people when mobsters were cool," Jim answered, holding a hand up to wave. Didn't even need to turn around to do that.

"His mob nickname is pretty sad though," he added after a second.

"Oh?" asked the girl with one of the better nicknames you might ever hear as she perched on the edge of one of the chairs. "What's that?"

"No Teeth Nunzio," Jim told her, shaking his head sadly. "Would you wanna be one for having no teeth? That guy is all gum and it's not the good kind of gum either."

Jim shuddered. "Guess that's why he carried the gun."

Anna considered that for a moment and concluded, "He could make other people have no teeth."

Jim hadn't thought about that himself so he nodded because, yeah, he could definitely do that.

"Now, would he do that with the gun or with his fists?" he had to ask. "Because the gun...might do a little more than leave someone with a lisp."

"I think hitting someone with the gun would be more effective," Anna said. "Not shooting them. That would just make them dead."

"Ah, using the gun as a blunt instrument," Jim said, getting it now. "Yeah, that would probably shatter a few teeth. Maybe that's what this guy should have done to be scarier."

Not that he wasn't scary already. Mobster and all. "Driven by revenge and the echo of people calling him names about his lack of teeth, he goes out and shatters teeth of anyone who looks at him funny. Might make for a better documentary. Shooting people with a gun? Very unoriginal."

"Effective, though," Anna mused. "Although if everyone else is shooting people I don't guess it makes you stand out much."

"From what I gathered from this documentary, mobsters like guns and they like to shoot people with those guns," Jim said, shrugging a shoulder.

"Some of them are better at it than others. And some of them are a little more inventive. If you were a mobster, what would your schtick be? And if you say you wouldn't have teeth, I am going to be so disappointed."

Anna thought about it for a moment, then said, her smile a little sly, "I'd wear all red, so they would call me Anna Dressed in Blood." She paused, then added, "If I was a mobster." Or, you know. Herself.

"That's...a little creepy which means it's perfect," Jim said, impressed. "I was gonna try to come up with something but seriously, anything else is gonna pale in comparison to that. Is your name Anna?"

Beverly Dressed in Blood didn't have the same ring.
