Fifth Floor Common Room, Saturday morning

As busy as she'd been recently, Jessica thought it was nice to take a Saturday morning, grab some cereal, and turn on the TV to watch some cartoons. There was just one problem with this.

"Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring," she said as she flipped through the channels. Apparently they didn't make cartoons like they did when she was a kid... well, when Peter was a kid, at least. Nothing seemed as interesting as her cereal.

And that's how Jessica ended up eating cereal while watching an infomercial for exercise equipment. No, it wasn't a good infomercial. No, it wasn't something she was interested in purchasing. But Chuck Norris was on it and it was mildly amusing to remind herself of a few years ago when he was somewhat relevant again because of internet mockery. Those were good times.

Gert didn't have a whole lot to do around the island, which meant she and Old Lace found themselves spending a lot of time in common rooms.

"...why would anyone watch this?"

"Because there's nothing else on, and cereal is better with the TV on," Jessica pointed out.

"Last night's film du jour was about frat idiots who were antagonizing a grizzly bear," Gert said. "This is still worse."

"Come on, there's an outdated internet meme trying to get us to exercise. How is that not at least slightly entertaining?" Jessica asked.

"It's a morbid reminder of all the stairs I need to take to go anywhere in this town," Gert deadpanned.

"The stairs aren't so bad once you get used to them," said the girl with the superpowers that let her travel by rooftop with ease. "That'll happen sooner than later."

"I guess if I don't, I could always see if Old Lace has an interest in pulling me around on a sled," Gert said thoughtfully. "What do you think?"

Old Lace thought no, but maybe Jessica would feel differently.

Sia got to the common room, took one look at the TV, and assumed, "You must be making fun of this."

"Not really. It's mostly a screen saver. White noise while I eat," Jessica said. "Making fun of it would mean paying more attention to it than I really want to."

"And you couldn't find anything better?" Because Sia was judging so much about this program already.

"It's this or the weekend morning news. I choose this," Jessica said.

"How is his beard not distracting?" Sia wondered. And she came from a place where people liked their beards.

"I honestly don't look at any part of him except the beard," Jessica said. "It's been his trademark for about 50 years, so I don't even bother with anything else. I could not tell you what color his eyes are and I'm looking at the screen right now."

There was a long pause.

"I can't, either."

"You know, I really don't know where to start," Atton mused.

"Try," Sia suggested.

"How many illegal substances do you think this guy did before he got on camera?"

[notconflicted]

"I'm honestly not sure there were any, and that's what concerns me," Sia admitted.

"You think he got hit in the head a lot as a child?" Atton said. "That's the problem with these types."

"Damn, he's been drinking a lot of caf, hasn't he?" Atton said as he strolled into the common room. He was sure he knew that face from somewhere - he watched a lot of bad Earth television - but meh.

"I'm not sure if it's that or he's just straight up chugging red hair dye at this point, but he's definitely drinking something a little weird," Jessica mused.

"Look at the guy," Atton said, throwing himself onto a couch. "He's vibrating like someone shoved a starship engine up his ass."

"I'm pretty sure that's a feature," Jessica said. "It's one of the many ways it helps you get into shape."

"Ew," Atton said succinctly. "But hey, no pain, no gain."

He had been watching entirely too much television.

"I'm pretty sure that's not the kind of pain they usually talk about when they use that phrase, but whatever works for the guy," Jessica mused.
