Third Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

For some reason, the TV in the third floor common room wouldn't budge from ABC Family tonight, which was how Topher found himself watching a marathon of Swapped Upon Delivery. Besides the fact that it was about two angsty girls and their drama, it seemed like a pretty good show.

Of course, he wound up missing huge chunks of it while he was playing with his laptop and the characters were signing at each other instead of speaking aloud. By the fourth consecutive episode, he looked up from his laptop, watched the rest of a scene whose beginning he'd missed, and gasped, "They broke up? Noooo!"

So he was kind of liking the show. Shut up.

"They care about eating meat, but negative caring," Topher pointed out. "But they usually don't firebomb anyone. Except that one group, MEATA or whatever." PETA, Topher. "I feel like they might have done that."

"So, if I'm following you - and I deserve a medal if I am - you're willing to consider caring about your friends' personal lives if it means you can object to them having personal lives, like vegetarians do with eating meat?" Jessica checked.

"Good job!" Topher congratulated her, looking pleased and impressed. "I can solder a medal for you if you want. It might have profanity on it, but in a congratulatory way."

"You know, I'll just take the fact that you and I aren't friendly enough for you to take any interest in my life as my medal," Jessica decided.

"It's a good call," Topher agreed. "I don't know how to make medals. Although if there's ever a unit on that in Alenko's class, I reserve the right to make you one. How do you spell your n-- actually, what is your name again?"

"Jessica," she sighed. "Would 'Jess' make it easier? Because you could call me that if it's just an issue with word length."

"Jessica's okay," Topher assured her. "'Jess' makes me think of that sad kid from Overpass to Tabarithia. I'm like eighty percent sure I can spell that."

"Eighty percent sure you can spell what? 'Jessica' or 'Tabarithia'?" Jessica checked.

"Jessica," Topher clarified. "I know I can spell the other one 'cause I wrote a book report on it in second grade."
