Third Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

For some reason, the TV in the third floor common room wouldn't budge from ABC Family tonight, which was how Topher found himself watching a marathon of Swapped Upon Delivery. Besides the fact that it was about two angsty girls and their drama, it seemed like a pretty good show.

Of course, he wound up missing huge chunks of it while he was playing with his laptop and the characters were signing at each other instead of speaking aloud. By the fourth consecutive episode, he looked up from his laptop, watched the rest of a scene whose beginning he'd missed, and gasped, "They broke up? Noooo!"

So he was kind of liking the show. Shut up.

While making her way up the stairs, Jessica heard a 'noooo' and decided to check it out. "Who broke up?" she asked, popping her head into the room.

"The girl and the guy with the... weird face," Topher complained, pointing at the screen. "I was rooting for them!"

Topher was being a baby.

"So, fictional people, right?" Jessica checked. "So I don't have to get emotionally invested at all? Just making sure."

"...Do you get emotionally invested in real people's relationships?" Topher wanted to know. "I'm pretty sure that's the wrong way to do it."

...Nope.

"I think it's a little more reasonable than getting invested in the relationships of fake people. Because they're real," Jessica said, really stressing those last two words. Not that she expected it to actually get the point across. Oh, Topher.

"Wrong," Topher chided her. Wrongly. "Real people are only like five percent as interesting and their drama is less tropey and more stupid 'cause it's not written to capture audience attention. Duh."

"Do you have friends?" Jessica asked. "And if you do, do you just not care what happens to them at all?"

"I do, yeah!" Topher was proud of that. "But I do not care about their relationships. Probably because they all make bad girlfriend choices."

"Well, I'm not going to argue that you're doing it wrong. To each their own. I'm just going to say that I feel a little bad for you if you don't care at all about kind of a big part of your friends' lives," Jessica said.

"I bet they will be back together in about twenty minutes, but the the guy has to join the Navy or something."

Emily might or might not follow those series a bit too eagerly.

"No, this was a season finale, I think," Topher said. "That'll take at least a season to undo, minimum."

"Oh." Well, she probably got it close enough.

"They're doomed then," added as she shrugged.

"That's more like it," Topher agreed before heaving a dramatic sigh. "Poor, poor angry girl and weird-faced guy."

"They'll be doing the nasty with other people before the next season begins. Have you seen the angry girl?"

Emily might or might not have been projecting, shh.

"Like onscreen and stuff?" Topher wondered, momentarily distracted. "Ewwww. I don't wanna watch that."

"If only," said Emily with a devilish smirk. "This is for little kids after all. They'll be just talk about it, probably. Lots and lots of poorly made metaphors."

"I might need to find a new show," Topher decided. "That sounds... not good."

"Hey, don't quote me on that. There might be more important drama going on so everyone forgets about it." It wouldn't be that weird, really.

"Is that an actual plot on this, or is that just a completely out there guess?" Jessica checked.

"I'm not really following the last episodes, but I think that totally happened to her last boyfriend. So she got another. But apparently it's the end of the season so that wasn't the case."

A beat and then she snorted lightly. "It's probably for an equally ridiculous reason though."

"I'm not usually one for teen dramas. If the equally ridiculous reason was aliens, I might check it out," Jessica noted.

"Teen alien drama." Emily considered the idea for a moment. "I would give it a shot."

"If I ever find it on TV, I'll let you know before making the popcorn," Jessica said.

"Girl, I'll bring you the popcorn to make, unless it's the instant kind. I can bring packs of that, too."

Because if someone offered her something she had to offer something back, dammit.

"I was probably just going to take it from the cabinets, but I appreciate the teamwork," Jessica said.
