2nd Floor Common Room, Thursday Afternoon

So, guess you couldn't leave Peter alone for too long. Or maybe he was feeling particularly frustrated with his foxness today. Natalie didn't know. What she did know was that she'd come back from her visit to Clint's office and found her desk in disarray, and Mr. Moxy hissing at Peter like he'd really crossed some kind of line by messing up Natalie's workspace.

She'd left the cat in the room and ushered the fox out into the hallway with her. She'd been meaning to go for a snack, anyway. "It was because I took the laptop with me, wasn't it?" she asked, as they were entering the common room. "Already told you you can't use it, anyway."

Peter the fox seemed to give her an indignant look.

"What?" she asked. "You'd just scratch it. We've been over this. You don't even have your own independent narrative." Too bad foxes couldn't roll their eyes all that well, though she got the message. "And don't give me that look, I know you don't. So, there's nothing you can or should be doing on a computer right now."

Was that a whine?

"You're a fox. Deal with it."

She was going to get them some cereal right now. And yes, newbies, arguing with animals was a thing that occasionally happened in this town. In case you hadn't figured that out yet.

Topher nodded. "So you're gonna throw it at him, shriek, and run away?"

That wasn't even remotely sarcastic or teasing. That was genuinely the best plan he could think of.

Natalie blinked at that.

"I'm not you, Topher," was the best response she could come up with. Because there were very few situations where she saw herself likely to either shriek or run away.

And sudden naked teen politicians in her general vicinity wasn't one of those situations.

"Well, duh," Topher said. "You should be so lucky."

Charming.

"To feel the need to run screaming from a naked boy?"

Yeah, somehow Natalie wasn't following his reasoning.

"Just to be me in general," Topher clarified. "I'll admit that isn't the most kickass part, but..."

[whenshewasnice]

"And what is the kickass part?"

Even Peter looked up at that question.

[dollpocalypse]

"My brain, obviously." OBVIOUSLY. "Though I will admit that it'd be cool to have your..." Think fast, Topher! "...meta superpower."

That wasn't even a lie!

"It's not a superpower." Well, it wasn't. And most of the time, these days, it just served to make it clear to her that she wasn't home. "Thank you for implying I'm stupid, though."

So dry.

[dollpocalypse]

"Not stupid, just somewhere between average and way, way above average!" Topher was the nicest ever. "You should see that for the compliment that it is."

[whenshewasnice]

"It's not much of a compliment." Natalie felt saying that was like a PSA. "Not that I'd excpect you to be a great judge of my brains, anyway."

He barely knew her, for one thing.

"True," Topher conceded, "I lack the medical training to be an expert on anyone's brain yet. The point is I was not insulting you."

"You not meaning it that way doesn't always mean it won't be received that way."

But it didn't really matter, because she didn't really care. She glanced down. Peter had gone back to ignoring them. "How surprising."
