Third Floor Common Room, Late Saturday Morning

That Korra was ransacking the common room cupboards for food was not that unusual a thing, though usually she wasn't quite so tall, shirtless or, well, male. Though she was trying to focus on the tall part, since it was helpful with reaching the higher shelves.

Still, if there was any doubt whatsoever as to the identity of the only Water Tribesman on the island, the polar bear dog inching ever closer to the couch would probably help clear that up.

"I'm Korra, and yeah, apparently it is, though I'd have preferred not looking like a younger version of my dad." And if she sounded especially chagrined by that, she'd thought she made a pretty hot guy until she'd looked in a mirror.

"Don't worry, Naga doesn't eat people. Too much effort when she can just beg for snacks instead."

"That's - extra weird, yeah," Kate agreed. And now she was thankful she a) didn't have a brother and b) didn't look like her father. There were things you just didn't need to know about your relatives. "Alec said it shouldn't last too long at least." Any amount of long was too long, but...

She let Naga smell her hand again than reached to pat her carefully. "She's gorgeous. What kind of ...creature is she?"

"Yeah, last time something like this happened we were only kids for the weekend, so hopefully this'll go away by Monday."

Naga's tail only increased its wagging at getting a pat. "She's a polar bear dog, I trained her myself." And yes she sounded proud of herself for that.

"It better. I do not have enough clothes that fit for any longer." That's right. Focus on important things, Kate.

"I haven't heard of that breed before," she said, finally smiling at the wagging tail and continuing to pat. Did polar bear dogs like their behind their ears scratched? "She seems so sweet but training her can't have been easy." If the pride was any indication anyway.

"I'm just glad that my pants are baggy enough that they still fit," Korra said. The same didn't go for her top, hence the shirtlessness.

You wouldn't have heard of the breed, because polar bear dogs weren't a breed, Kate. But they did like their ears being scratched if the way Naga was pressing her head against Kate's hand was any indication. "Well, there was a bit od stress at the beginning." Not least because the non-Katara members of the White Lotus were convinced the Avatar was going to get herself eaten. "But it was totally worth it."

Hmm. In Kate's opinion, pants that were baggy enough to fit into as a gigantic guy were not the right size to wear normally. But then she wore spandex sometimes so.

"I can tell," she said, still petting the gigantic animal who might have been a crazy new breed of dogs. "Also now you never need a blanket again."

Reminded of her original intention, Kate looked up at the stash of food Korra had pulled down. "Did you find anything good in the cupboards there?"

The bagginess allowed for layers, those were important when you lived at the South Pole.

"Or a pillow, sometimes not even the bed." Because, yes, Naga was just that big, cuddly, and soft.

Korra looked through her spoils and grabbed a chuck of jerky. "Depends on whether you're a meat for breakfast type person." Personally she was, but you never knew.

In Antarctica where the dinosaurs lived? And awww! now Kate wanted one. Why did everyone else get the vicious animal friends? (Well, she had Tommy, but)

"I'm more of a 'give me food now before I start eating a chair leg' breakfast person," Kate said. "But I'm pretty sure that's just the guy-ness today."

If Naga knew what Kate's South Pole had, she'd want to visit immediately, great big lizards to chase and play with!

"I hear you there," Korra said. In her case it happened even when she wasn't a guy. "Most of this looks tastier than a chair-leg though."

Had Naga met Old Lace yet? Because there was a giant big lizard right here to chase and play with!

"Excuse me, Naga," she said to the polar bear dog because it seemed like it was smart to be polite to a polar bear dog. Kate made her way over to the stash of food and picked out her own chunk of jerky and a handful of cookies (breakfast of champions). "Thanks for sharing. It'd've been sad to have to break a bunch of furniture just to get to the tasty chair legs."

Not yet she hadn't. The whole island would probably be able to hear the happy barking when she did.

"No problem," Korra said. "I figure if there's no name on it, it's for everyone. Plus it helps save the chairs."

"And at some point today, people are going to want to sit in the chairs and bitch about whatever's on the TV," Kate joked. Because she'd been in Fandom long enough to pick that up.

Korra didn't look the slightest bit guilty at the mention of the television. At all. It hadn't even been the one in this common room. "Yep, they sure do like their TV around here."

She raised an eyebrow, curious. "I'm just surprised theyr'e around for actual TV. At home, my guys would claim any screen anywhere to play their games and chainsaw each other."

Korra looked confused. "What kind of sport involves a chainsaw." She was going to go with a fun and dangerous one.

"Fake chainsaw," she said apologetically. Because Kate understood the appeal of an awesome weapon. "It's a video game."

Korra was just going to keep looking confused. "A what?"

Someone still hadn't been introduced to those.

"...were your parents really strict or something?" Kate asked.

"Not really?" Of course, they hadn't been allowed to do as much raising as they might have liked. "And Master Katara made sure I could listen to the radio and everything."

Kate stared for a long few beats before she remembered different worlds, dumbass.

"Right. Sorry. I forgot the different worlds thing here. Are you from, like, 1920 or a totally different place?" She was betting the second. Given the, you know, polar beard og.

And if this was a game-show Kate would win a wonderful prize for that guess. "Totally different place," Korra confirmed with a nod. "Even the shape of the countries look different, I checked the maps."

"That's really cool. And probably weird for you, but cool." Kate said. "How did you end up going to another world for school?"

Jesus, Kate, could you be more curious? Who are you, Teddy?

Korra shrugged. "Not sure. There was a portal, we fell through it, that's about it." And if there were a few details left out there, well, no one really needed to know them.

"Portals are a bitch," she empathized.

Kate realised what had started the tangent. "So, yeah, video games are games people play on the TV. Like there's probably some game version of lacrosse out there."

"But why don't they just play instead of pretending too on the TV?" In case Kate needed a clue that Korra was a bit of a jock.

She shrugged. "Cause they don't have a place to play or - like the chainsaw game - people tend to frown on actually using chainsaws on your friends."

Yeah, it was weird.

"Why would they want to use even fake chainsaws on each other?"

Korra had assumed they were just randomly using chainsaws on non-alive things.

"Because they're guys and need something to be idiotic about?" Kate suggested.

Seriously in all the times she'd watched her guys & the Avengers play that stupid game, she'd only seen a girl play once. And that was Cassie trying it out.

"Huh, Bolin and Mako never seemed like they wanted to throw chainsaws at each other." No, the three of you just played a sport where you flung fire, rocks, and water at people.

"Did they try to beat each other up instead?" she asked. Though...it wasn't like Teddy & Eli had any lack of violence in their lives.

"No really, but they're brothers so maybe that means they're less likely to?" Korra did not have siblings, could you tell?

"No way. You're meaner to your siblings than anyone else," Kate said. "They have to forgive you. Sort of." She wasn't sure Susan was going to forgive her for randomly going off to boarding school in Maryland.

Korra frowned slightly. "I guess that makes sense." Only child with no peer group until she was seventeen.

Something Kate, growing up in Manhattan and thrown into society as a toddler, would never ever get.

"I feel like I'm stating the obvious here, but you so don't have brothers or sisters, huh."

"Nope, only child, Mom and Dad apparently decided one was enough." What with the fire- and earthbending showing up ahead of schedule and all.

Kate had heard other people say that with some measure of bitterness so she wasn't entirely sure where to go with that.

"Bet if you had little baby sibs at home, the whole polar bear dog thing wouldn't've flown."

"Maybe, but Naga's pretty good with kids." Of course, she would have had to be living at home rather than in the compound for it to be an issue. "And Dad made her saddle himself."
