3rd Floor Common Room - Friday Evening

It was Friday night, and Kate was hanging out in the Common Room. Even worse, she was spending her time reading blog posts about Fashion Week when she'd been there with her sister every year since she was 10. Last year she and Cassie had gone & cracked themselves up trying to choose which designs would be the best superhero costumes. This year's collections though - Kate wasn't sure she was actually missing much fashion-wise. She still felt a little like a loser for not being there.

She flipped over to her sister's Instagram feed and rolled her eyes. Really, Susan? That was what you were wearing?

Kate finally pushed away her laptop and turned the tv on. To the sounds of whatever was on, she wandered over to the kitchen to make popcorn. Ooh, or there was cookie dough. Hmm, to risk turning the oven on or just to eat it raw?

"I rhymed 'desperation' with 'consummation' today," Gert offered. "For cheering on Valentine's Day daters. So..."

"You don't reek of desperation! Your one true goal is consummation?" Kate offered.

"Something like that," Gert said, squinting. "That's pretty good. If we have to revise it, I might submit your version."

"Feel free. You did the hard part of setting up the rhyme." Well, 'rhyme' but it counted. "So are there uniforms for this whole 'Valentine's cheering extravaganza?"

"There are indeed," Gert confirmed, selecting a bag of mini-muffins from the fridge and deeming them unhealthy enough to bring back to the couch with her. "Pants and skirts. I assume the skirt versions are for Loki."

"Hopefully one of the pleated ones. And a matching hair ribbon," Kate decided. "And a bow for Old Lace?"

No, she didn't think so, but it'd still be funny.

"My guess is she'd bite anyone who tried it," Gert deduced. "Like any dignified pet would."

"I'm guessing that sweaters are out during the winter too then," she pondered. Which was too bad given the cold blooded part and all.

"And little tiny shoes," Gert agreed. "They might keep her warm, but I draw the line at making a carnivorous beast dress like a socialite's chihuahua, you know?"

"No pink, no giant sunglasses," Kate said. "Got it."

"Exactly," Gert said, shooting Kate a thumbs-up. "So, are you a pet person?"

"My roommate's dog is okay, I guess, but..." Kate shrugged. "What about you? If you didn't have a carnivorous dinosaur, I mean."

"I used to have a pot-bellied pig," Gert offered with a shrug. "Named Orwell. I'd still have him if it was up to me, but he and Old Lace would probably fight a lot."

Also, Maddie had to draw the line somewhere.

Also it'd probably be a very short fight settled in favor of the sharp toothed one.

Kate did not say that because no.

"You named your pig Orwell? That wasn't too...on the nose?"

"I was eleven," Gert offered in her own defense. "And Orwell was my hero back then. It was like the me version of getting an actor's poster on my bedroom wall."

Which was clearly a huge no-no for her.

"Why, what would you have named a pig?"

"I'm sure Orwell would've been flattered to hear that," she teased.

Kate had to consider that. "When I was eleven? Probably something incredibly embarrassing."

"There you go," Gert reasoned. "I had a fish named Marx at one point, too. He... got eaten by another fish."

"Poor Marx. The rich get richer," she said, rolling her eyes.

"So said my parents as part of their eulogy at the funeral I made us have," Gert sighed. "No wonder they turned out to be evil."

"Also really, really cliche," Kate pointed out.

Which meant she was too, but when the shoe fit (speaking of cliches).

"I always say anyone who can't think of a good metaphor on the spot is probably secretly a terrorist," Gert said with a nod before amending for clarification, "I don't actually say that."

"Good," Kate smirked. "Because I'm pretty sure anyone who actually has a catchphrase is a terrorist."

Or possibly a superhero. Sometimes the lines blurred.

"Or just a douche," Gert chimed in approvingly. Because yeah, she was thinking of superheroes. "Either way, not someone I'd be lining up at the door to be friends with."

"You lining up at the door for anything would be a pretty hilarious sight to see," Kate pointed out.

"Depends how long the rest of the line was and what it was for," Gert mused. "I might get in line if it was free Apple products where taking one rescued a baby in Africa, or something."
