Fifth floor common room [early afternoon]

Rilla and Jims, dressed in their Easter best, had returned from church on the mainland and were now in the common room. They (well, Rilla. Jims was only so helpful) unloaded an enormous hamper of food that Susan had sent from Ingleside. Despite Rilla being at school for three years, nothing could convince Susan that Yankees knew the first thing about cooking.

So there were hot cross buns and pies and cakes and cookies while Rilla was starting on some eggs and tea and Jims was trying to fit himself into the now-empty hamper.

Have some Easter brunch, everyone! Rilla promises not to check to see if you attended a service.

"As long as you're going all out with the brunch, I'll take some," Jessica said. "You clearly take your Easter brunches seriously."

Rilla nodded. "It's a big deal at home."

"It's probably something that loses some impact here without having family around," Jessica said. Either that, or Rilla was surrounded by people who didn't care a whole lot. Jessica was going with what she figured Rilla would think was the more optimistic view.

"A bit," Rilla admitted. "There seemed to be very little point to have an egg hunt when Jims is one of the only children and he'd spend most of the time trying to eat grass."

"As long as it's real grass and not plastic," Jessica said. "... This is probably why I don't look after a kid."

Rilla laughed. "I'm ashamed to admit that 'well, it's only a little bit of plastic grass' has crossed my mind before I take it away from him."

"In fairness, it does look delicious and I'm sure he has fun with it before it's taken away," Jessica said.

"Oh, he howled like the dickens when I did," Rilla admitted. "It was his very favourite piece of fake grass ever!"

"Next year, try giving him cooked noodles if he cries. It's grass-like, and he can eat them all he wants," Jessica suggested.

"You are a genius," Rilla proclaimed.

"That's what I tell people, but they don't seem to listen," Jessica joked.

"I'd be happy to provide you a letter of reference," Rilla told her.

"Actually, if you could write that letter just so I have it to show off whenever, I'd appreciate it," Jessica said. "Just to really throw people off their game."

"Of course," Rilla said. "Is there anything in particular you'd like mentioned?"

"Not really. Just focus on the word 'genius' and see where that takes you," Jessica said.

"That's a quick turn-around. Thanks, Rilla," Jessica said.
