Fifth floor common room [early afternoon]

Rilla and Jims, dressed in their Easter best, had returned from church on the mainland and were now in the common room. They (well, Rilla. Jims was only so helpful) unloaded an enormous hamper of food that Susan had sent from Ingleside. Despite Rilla being at school for three years, nothing could convince Susan that Yankees knew the first thing about cooking.

So there were hot cross buns and pies and cakes and cookies while Rilla was starting on some eggs and tea and Jims was trying to fit himself into the now-empty hamper.

Have some Easter brunch, everyone! Rilla promises not to check to see if you attended a service.

Jessica's creator was a mad scientist with metal octopus arms. She was not the type to attend service. But she was the type to walk into a common room and make jokes.

"Hey, Rilla. I hope all that food is stuff you unloaded, because I don't think it's all going to fit in the basket as long as there's a kid in there," Jessica pointed out.

Rilla laughed. "Oh, please, help yourself. I don't want to drag it all the way back down the hall. Susan is convinced I'd starve without her."

"Is Susan a very overprotective person here I don't know or somebody from your home who is very kind with giving out food?" Jessica checked as she investigated the cakes. "Either way, she has my thanks."

"Susan's our housekeeper and cook at home," Rilla explained. "She doesn't think anyone in America can cook."

"Well, if we're using the sample set of Americans in this conversation right now, she's right," Jessica said. "So I'll give her that as I take this." She put a piece of cake on a plate and held it up.

"What, don't they eat kids during Easters back in your world?" asked Emily, surprise perfectly mimicked. Well, it was a pretty decent act in her opinion.

"Only if they're made of chocolate," Jessica deadpanned.

"With a surprise inside? And I don't mean 'little chocolate innards', no," Emily answered.

"I'm very slightly concerned about what other kind of surprises you might have in mind if the first thing you thought of is 'innards,' so I'm going to say no. Solid chocolate," Jessica said. "Which is the only acceptable way."

Going by the jeans and t-shirt she was wearing, Maddie wasn't the type to attend service, either. But she was bored enough to wander upstairs, so.

"Wow," she said, "someone went all out."

"That someone wasn't me," Rilla assured her. "My idea of festivities would have included more glitter."

Maddie looked at the food. "...Edible glitter, right?"

"Well, I'm on student council," Rilla said. "I'm a glitter expert."

"Is that like a prerequisite, or does it happen after you make it on there?" Maddie wondered.

"Hey, Maddie," Jessica said, with her piece of cake. "Come. Sit. Enjoy the work of other people for brunch."

"I see you went the healthy route," Maddie grinned.

"I'm just making sure it doesn't go to waste," Jessica said. "I'm being helpful."

"Is it good enough that I should be helpful too?" Maddie checked.

"What's best though," Emily said from her corner of the kitchen, a cross bun in one hand. "Is that it's free for the taking."

Free food > Everything right?

"That's true of like all the food that shows up in here, though," Maddie said. "I guess that's what happens in a dorm full of high school students."

"Full of high school students with some of them being pretty wealthy," Emily said as an addendum. "Myself included I guess, but I haven't had the chance to treat everyone to junk food yet."

Emily wasn't a church person, nobody was surprised, sure. She was a fan of yummy looking food though, specially when she got to eat it.

"Hey Rilla. Jims," she said with eyes inspecting the food. "That looks good."

"Help yourself," Rilla said, smiling. "Happy Easter!"

"Thanks. It's amazing how amid the oddities some things never change," Emily said as she tried to make her mind about what to try first.

"I'm almost amazed we aren't being inundated with rains of tiny chicks and bunnies," Rilla admitted.
