Archery Range - Saturday Morning

Kate had not gone to Prom last night because...it just wasn't going to happen.  Especially with whatever the other weird stuff was that had been going on all week.

Today, however, she was back on the range and getting frustrated with a move that she still hadn't mastered.  It shouldn't be that hard to shoot six arrows while spinning a full 360 degrees, but those last two arrows never ended properly.  Sometimes the last even missed the target entirely, and that was just not okay.  This was possible.  She'd seen Hawkeye do it so clearly it was possible.  It just didn't seem to be possible for Kate quite yet.

Today, however, today might just be the day if she could figure out what was throwing her off at the end.

Kate was... definitely not the incesty one here. She left that to Shadowhunters and X-Men (but mostly Shadowhunters).

"Please stop calling me 'Mom,'" she managed finally. "Because a) I'm 17 and b) that's just wrong."

"And I... am gay?" Alec reminded the room, since he didn't see anyone else around and it seemed relevant to the situation. "But -- Kate is a girl."

Things everyone in the room was aware of!

Cassandra crossed her arms at him, purposefully arranging her hands so the mark on the back of her right hand was clearly obvious.

This was fun. She hadn't seen them so discombobulated since that thing that happened in London which was totally not her fault.

"Isn't it cool how he's so observant?" she asked Kate.

"It's something," Kate replied, her own arms crossed over her chest until she realised that her body language was the exact same as the other girl's.

So. Weird timeline, Fandom thing. It had to be. Which meant rolling with it was the best idea. And never, ever accidentally falling down and having sex with Alec.

"So. Okay." Rolling with it was harder than she thought. "What's your name?"

"Cassandra Lightwood," she replied airily, her voice something approaching innocent.

"...That is a Shadowhunter name."

Oh god, this had some legitimacy. Oh god.

"And you know we're... young now and haven't had you yet?"

Cassandra rolled her eyes. "Um. Do I look like I've been hit in the head a lot? I know that people who are like two years older than me aren't my parents."

Which was an accurate statement on a variety of different levels.

"It's time travel. Duh."

Duh was a terrible word. She would not be using that word again.

Okay, Alec gave up.

He glanced at Kate. "Are you okay?"

"She's named after my best friend," Kate observed, having somehow decided to believe it fully after that. "And she pretty much looks like you. Kinda not what I was expecting this morning."

Didn't pregnancies after Prom only occur if you had sex?

"The best things in life are unexpected," Cassandra said serenely.

"I'm not sure that's true," Alec remarked, more to Kate than to Cassandra. Then, reluctantly, he added, "She looks like my sister, too. I don't understand why you and I would've-- but -- whatever."

It hurt his head to think about it, so he figured he might as well stop. "Do you shoot?" he asked Cassandra. They were in an archery range, after all. It would be kind of cool if she shot a bow and arrow too, wouldn't it?

"Do I shoot?" she replied with a grin. "Like I could've avoided it. Even if Uncle Jace says it's ridiculous."

"Clearly we went insane," Kate said to Alec under her breath. She winked at him then offered Cassandra her bow.

"Do you shoot well is the question I'm curious about."

"Kate was just trying a... shooting-six-arrows-while-spinning-in-a-circle thing," Alec offered, making his way to the target to collect the last six arrows to give to Cassandra. "If you want to try that."

"It's perfectly useful to be able to hit six guys around you," Kate pointed out as Alec collected the arrows.

"Yeah, perfectly useful until there's seven guys. I'm going to leave that to Mom," Cassandra decided, accepting the arrows and arranging them and herself into position.

She raised the bow and loosed a series of arrows into the farthest targets. It was serviceable shooting, the arrows landed accurately enough, but she didn't put much flair into it. "See? I can shoot."

Alec glanced at Kate and then back to Cassandra. "That wasn't bad," he commented mildly.

"I'm no Hawkeye or anything," Cassandra tossed off. "But I don't know if Uncle Clint could deal with another one so it's probably good."

Kate met his glance with a little bit of what could maybe be pride except that would be silly.

"It was good," she agreed, eyeing Cassandra again at the mention of 'Uncle Clint.' "She probably had to develop skills out of self-defense against us and our obsession."

"Probably," Alec admitted wryly. "So..." Hmm. How did you ask someone if she was a Shadowhunter? "Do you have other interests?"

"You're not supposed to sound like you're awkwardly hitting on me, dad," Cassandra informed him.

Excuse Kate as she had to turn to try to hide her laughter.

Alec sputtered. "That isn't what I meant!"

"Were you trying to ask me if I take after you with the demon fighting?" Cassandra asked innocently. "Because yes."
