Third Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

So, Kathy's grand plan to go trick-or-treating in the dorms to meet people had kind of been a bust, but an important discovery had been made nevertheless: Theo had never seen Mister What.

Not a single episode. Hadn't even heard of the show. On the eve of the fiftieth anniversary, even!

The very idea was shocking, but Kathy was there to make it right. She couldn't let her favorite wallflower buddy continue to wallow in cultural ignorance forever! So, she'd hooked up her laptop to the TV in the third floor common room, where she had every episode from the new run (and a bunch of the old) ~~torrented~~ TOTALLY LEGALLY OBTAINED on her external hard drive.

The amount of food she'd gotten from the Chinese place in town was ridiculous, but the delivery guy hadn't seemed too fussed about it and the price was about what she'd figured, so she just shrugged and hauled it up, spreading it on the counter. Hopefully the smell of General Tso's Chicken and the distinctive noise of Mister What's time and space machine would lure other people to coming around, too.

Theo didn't answer because he was too busy reaching for one of his fortune cookies so he could toss it at her. Not hard or anything like that but still at her!

The fortune cookie surprised her as it bounced off her head. "Oh, that tears it!" she declared, jumping up from her spot on the couch and snatching up one of her chopsticks.

"En garde!" she cried, moving into what she thought was a fencing pose, based entirely on what she'd seen on TV.

Theo was a little slower to react but once he figured out what she was doing, he snagged a chopstick and got to his feet, holding it up in a defensive stance.

"Bring it on!" he said, waving the chopstick.

"Take that!" she said, poking wildly at him with her chopstick. "I mean...have at thee!"

Because she was a pirate now. Or a musketeer.

Theo managed to dodge the first strike and tried to poke her shoulder with his chopstick. He was careful not to trip over his own feet because that would have been ridiculous.

"You missed!"

"Not for long!" she announced, before taking a chopstick to the shoulder. "You bilge rat!"

Pirate it was, then.

"Being down an arm won't stop me from poking you full of holes!"

"You'll never take me alive!" Theo said, twirling his chopstick. "And I know that's the point but it sounded cool to say!"

Kathy's attack was momentarily arrested by a fit of giggles. She would absolutely get back to skewering him in a second, but laughter needed to happen now.

"You'd--you'd better--get ready to meet your maker!"

"I'm always ready!" Theo wasn't really thinking before speaking but everything sounded cool. He jabbed low, trying to take out her leg now!

"Ready to die!" Kathy hollered, leaping backwards away from his low jab.

Instead of only jumping back a foot or so, she found herself on the other side of the room. And when she landed, she immediately bounced upwards again, high enough to touch the ceiling.

Her second landing was not so graceful; she hit the floor on her hands and knees, looking dazed and very, very confused.

Theo might not understand the string of Korean words she let out right then, but he could probably guess from the tone that they weren't words to use in polite company.

Theo actually had no idea what had just happened. He just knew she'd jumped a lot higher than he thought she could and he was left standing there, holding a chopstick, wide eyed.

He was speechless momentarily, not sure what he was supposed to do. And then he moved closer to her. "Kathy? Are you okay?"

Okay, there were two ways she could handle this. She could either play it cool, act like she'd totally meant to do that, and then go back to her room and have a complete and utter freakout back in privacy. That would be the suave thing to do, anyway.

"OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED DID YOU SEE THAT OH MY GOD THAT WASN'T NORMAL!"

...Or there was option two, apparently.

"Yeah." He could agree with that not being something everyone could do. He crouched down, frowning. "Are you okay, though?"

"I don't...know?" Kathy said, looking up at him. Was that a stupid question? Wait, of course it was a stupid question, it wasn't even supposed to be a question! "Feeling a little bit freaked out at the moment. That's kinda superseding everything else."

Kathy was the kind of girl who used 'superseding' when dazed.

"There's no random agony breaking through the haze of wtf, though, so I think I'm okay?"

"Well, that's good," he said, wincing sympathetically. "Nothing like that's happened before, I'm guessing?"

Kathy shook her head in a very vigorous no. "I must have had some kind of...adrenaline...rush?"

See Kathy.

See Kathy grasp at straws.

Grasp, Kathy. Grasp.

"From our fencing, you know? Or maybe there's a really springy part of the floor?"

That possibility sounded even more far-fetched than the adrenaline one. She didn't care, she was saying it anyway.

"Maybe." Theo didn't really believe it, no. But, he wasn't going to start pushing and prodding. "Maybe we should just sit and watch TV for awhile? No more possibly hitting springy parts of the floor."

"You have the very best of best ideas," Kathy said gratefully, carefully pushing herself up off the floor. "I mean--if you still want to? I'd get it if maybe that little floorshow kind of...made you think I was weird or something."

"I've seen weirder, believe me," he said, shaking his head. "It's not weird. I still want to. Come on."

"Do feel free to share," Kathy mumbled, taking a moment to steady herself on her feet and make sure she wasn't going to bounce off randomly in the air while doing it. Her hand hovered near Theo, just in case she needed to grab onto him fast to keep her feet. "Because I'm feeling pretty weird right now."

"It's okay," Theo said, walking her back to the couch. "Don't feel weird. It's really okay."

Theo was getting another appreciative smile as Kathy sat back down on the couch, her hand immediately reaching for something to hold so it would be less obvious they were shaking. "So...."

Great for a discussion starter, better with a discussion topic in mind.

"...I was totally gonna win that fight, you know."

"Hey, I already had you minus a limb!" Theo pointed out as he sat down. "You were totally going to lose."

"I just wanted you to feel like you'd accomplished something before I trounced you," Kathy retorted, nose in the air. "I was about to inform you that I was not left-handed anyway."

"Suuuure," Theo said, shaking his head and sitting back. "You just keep on thinking that. I'll let you."
