Third Floor Common Room [Friday evening]

Celia had thought to simply sit on one of the sofas and read the book she'd gotten from the library. That sounded like a wonderful way to spend her first Friday evening here -- utterly relaxing.

That was until she sat down on upon one of the small black rectangles that seemed to control the television (she'd pieced together what it was and what it did from walking through common rooms the past week). The thing came to life with a blare of static and noise, and Celia watched as a thin man examined garments before what appeared to be a ragtag group of clowns.

"This concerns me," he informed one of them. And that was how Celia discovered Project Runway.

Before she knew it, she had been sitting in the common room for a solid quarter-hour, staring at the television. It wasn't until she began being inexplicably bombarded by ads that she realized she had been so mesmerized, despite the total lack of an actual story.

Television was amazing.

"They don't need everyone to watch. They just need enough people to watch," Jessica said. "And tonight, you're one of those people. Apparently I am, too. Thanks for that."

"You're welcome," Celia said with a small smile, at least recognizing sarcasm even if she didn't understand television yet. "It was an accident, if that's a comfort to you. I don't even know how I turned it on -- I sat on this thing." She held up the remote sheepishly.

"That thing controls the TV," Jessica said. "So mystery solved. I'm just going to guess that you're not from this place and/or time?"

"It was 1884 until last Saturday," Celia said, nodding. "I'm still...figuring it out. The mystique of television is but one of a dozen or so things I've misunderstood today. Are you from this time, then?"

"Yeah, but from a slightly crazier world," Jessica said. "But for the most part, it's close enough. I'm Jessica, by the way. Nice to meet you."

"Celia," she said, with a tiny wave. "What makes your world crazy?"

She would be willing to believe almost anything at this point. She already had been convinced that Tim Gunn was literally made of iron, after all.

"Super powers, super science, genetic warfare, alien invasions, and bright costumes," Jessica said. "That about covers it. Most worlds don't have all of that."

"I don't know what half those things are," Celia admitted cheerfully, sighing a bit. "Mine doesn't have...well, there are people with powers. And I suppose I could have a bright costume quite easily, actually, if I wished. But I don't think we have the others."

"Give it time," Jessica said. "At the very least, it sounds like you have an outside shot at steampunk science in the next ten or fifteen years," Jessica said. "I'd invest heavily in gears if I were you."

"What's a steampunk?" Celia asked, looking alarmed. "I don't know that they're working on anything like that at home...though I don't follow all the science journals. I'm not allowed to get my hands on them too frequently, unfortunately."

"It's kind of hard to explain, but it's advanced science in a way that kind of fits in with your time," Jessica said. "It's mostly something a specific kind of nerd is way too focused on these days, but it could be real in your future."

"I'll let you know if they develop it after I return home in a few years," Celia assured her. "It can go on my list of things to use to shock people about the future."

"I appreciate any and all updates," Jessica said. "Especially since if you do end up with that stuff, who knows what your world might have by the present?"

"Presumably I won't know, unless I figure out how to live forever."

Don't speak too soon, there, Celia.

"So this 'steampunk' doesn't exist in this world's history?" she clarified.

"Nope. This world's a little too sane for that. Dspite the fact that we're on a magic island with people from different times and realitis," Jessica said.
