Fifth Floor Common Room: Tuesday Afternoon

After his class was done, Barry had headed back to his room and gathered his tablet where he had downloaded all the blockbuster sci-fi movies since 2009.

After setting up the TV, he had the tablet start transmitting the movies so he could watch while putting together some kind of small mechanical cage contraption on the coffee table.

"Jesus Christ," he moaned/bitched as the movie played on. "What Michael Bay does to a fucking cartoon is fucking ridiculous."

Barry started fast forwarding through the talky parts just to get to the action scenes.

"People in general are ignorant dumbfucks," Barry said rolling his eyes. "When they see something they don't understand they try to kill it or legislate it. Man! So in you're world people have different kinds of powers? Like Evan, right? Shit. That's got to be one fucked up genome."

"I think so. Evan and I don't really talk much, but I think he's from one of the present day mutant universes. My world's only barely getting started -- most people don't even know about mutants, yet. That's why I know Charles will be on the front end of it, even though no one ever seems to have heard of him." She shrugged again, feigning nonchalance. "Or they're just refusing to tell me that he died tragically in a centrifuge accident."

"They're probably worried about alternative timelines and that bullshit," Barry said with a shrug. "You know, step on a butterfly in the past and in the future it rains doughnuts or something."

"Around here, it would probably rain donuts anyway."

"Fuck, that better happen," Barry sighed. "I spent all day yesterday taking atmospheric readings so when that kind of shit happens I can analyze it."

Instead of eating donuts of course.

"I'm pretty sure most people would see a rain of donuts and think 'free baked goods'," Raven pointed out.

"Yeah, well I'm not most people," Barry joked. "What if we could figure out how that happened? How about we make it rain pancakes? Or medical supplies? Hey! Let's end world hunger and malaria instead of just eating what falls from the sky and taking it for granted. That's how I think."

"I'm not sure you could reproduce Fandom's specialness in other locations," Raven said. "Except maybe Nightvale. Though they might have an 'excessive creepiness' clause."

"Oh, you must know Cecil," Barry commented. "He's my big sib. And yeah, okay, it might be hard to replicate the process but doesn't mean I can't accept the possibility it might."

"Just so long as you don't get your hopes up too high," Raven said. "And yeah, Cecil's a good friend. We went to visit Nightvale over spring break, and I officiated his wedding."

"Wait. He's married?" Barry asked. "Is that to the Carlos guy he was talking about?"

Hard to miss with all the hearts around his name.

"It's pronounced ♥Carlos♥," Raven said. She'd been practicing the proper intonation. "And no, it's this girl Kenzi, who lives in town. They got married for all the presents. She's actually teaching, this summer. It should be a fun class."

"Married for the presents," Barry said with a chuckle and a shake of his head. "Well that's one way of getting a blender."

"So I can't help but notice you're taking all this Fandom stuff in stride," Raven said. "Is where you're from as weird as Nightvale, then?"

"Well I caught a couple of podcasts from Fandom on my transdimensional scanner," Barry explained. "So I knew this place was kind of fucked up to begin with. But to answer your question, the only weird thing about my world is me. As far as I know. I was smart before I was even born. In the womb smart kind of thing. I've been pushing the boundaries of science since I was a kid and that's led to some... unfortunate accidents."

"How on Earth can you tell if you were smart before you were born?"

"I remember being in my mom's womb. I could understand English before I was born," Barry explained.

"Huh." Raven tipped her head thoughtfully. "I wonder if you're a mutant, too, and your world is just . . . late-blooming."

"Doubtful," Barry said with a frown. "I was my own lab rat for a while. I went over my DNA and my parents 100 times over. They're dumb as rocks and outside of my brain I'm a typical human being."

"They can't be that dumb."

"For the past ten years they've thought any explosion I've set off in the house is the result of 'bad pipes."

"My foster mother doesn't always remember I exist," Raven countered. ". . . Though that's probably at least a little bit Charles' fault."

"Well... there have been times I've had to zap their memory," Barry admitted. "But that's usually because they walked in on me doing an experiment and really that's for their own protection."

Raven nodded. "See, this is exactly why I have Charles on a strict 'no reading my mind' policy. Saves him the temptation of messing with me."

"Yeah. I'm not a fan of telepaths doing that either," Barry admitted. "But my days of memory zapping are over here at Fandom."

Unless Gremlins are involved. He could charge for that.
