Gun Range [Tuesday morning]

With a week free from classes, Four was devoting his extra time to more practice in the gym and on the range.

He warmed up a bit with his pistol while he wanted for Sia to show up. The knife-throwing that Dauntless engaged in was flashy but ultimately pointless in a real fight.

"Showing off already?" Sia asked when she arrived.

Four's ears turned a little red. "Just warming up," he said. "I don't think it counts as showing off until someone's watching."

"I'm watching now," Sia pointed out.

"Then maybe I should start showing off," he said with a tiny smile.

He lowered the weapon instead. "How familiar are you with non-lightsabers?"

"Pretty good, but rusty," Sia admitted, coming closer when the weapon was lowered. She knew her safety. "I'm strictly used to blasters, though."

"Blasters?" Four asked.

"Have you ever seen Space Battles?" she asked, unholstering her blaster.

Four shook his head. "Sorry. I'm still way behind on pop culture stuff."

"A word of advice: people will tell you to watch that more than any other thing," she said. "Blasters are essentially lasers. There's no kickback, they're quieter, and they work off of a charge rather than real ammunition."

They were awesome.

"Ooooh," Four said, eyes lighting up. "You'll have to show me that too."

"I can do that," Sia said, showing him the blaster she'd brought with her. It was probably a little girly, but it looked really cool. "You can check it out."

"It's a lot lighter than what I'm used to," he said, after he took it. He handed her his pistol in return. "This will have a kickback, but not as a bad as some of the larger guns."

"And this is definitely heavier than what I'm used to," she said, finding a spot to lift the gun and aim it towards the target. "This weight adds up when you have to carry several weapons."

Four nodded. "That's why we start with running and weight lifting immediately," he said. "And hand-to-hand combat. There's no reason to hand people weapons if they can't steady them."

"How young do they begin training those of you who are born into Dauntless?" Sia wondered.

"Young," Four said. "It depends on the family, but there are nine year olds running around with blue hair, pierced noses and weapons."

"It probably says something about me that that doesn't seem strange," she said. Well, they didn't do blue hair and piercings much in the IKs.

"Something good," Four said with a smile. He held the blaster out, aimed, and fired. His first shot went slightly wide and he frowned.

"It takes some getting used to," Sia told him.

And when she fired his gun, hers fired further downward than she wanted because she wasn't used to the weight.

"At least we both hit targets?" Four offered. "I've seen people start off worse."

"We both do have prior experience, though," she pointed out.

"True," Four said. "One shot should be enough to fix our aims, then. Furthest from the target buys coffee?"

She raised her eyebrow at that, but nodded. "Sounds like a fair deal."

Four took a deep breath to center himself as Amar had taught him, breathing in, focusing, and then breathing out as he fired.

He hit dead center.

And there was the eyebrow raise again.

"Showoff," she said.

She was totally impressed.
