Gun Range [Tuesday morning]

With a week free from classes, Four was devoting his extra time to more practice in the gym and on the range.

He warmed up a bit with his pistol while he wanted for Sia to show up. The knife-throwing that Dauntless engaged in was flashy but ultimately pointless in a real fight.

"At least we both hit targets?" Four offered. "I've seen people start off worse."

"We both do have prior experience, though," she pointed out.

"True," Four said. "One shot should be enough to fix our aims, then. Furthest from the target buys coffee?"

She raised her eyebrow at that, but nodded. "Sounds like a fair deal."

Four took a deep breath to center himself as Amar had taught him, breathing in, focusing, and then breathing out as he fired.

He hit dead center.

And there was the eyebrow raise again.

"Showoff," she said.

She was totally impressed.

"It's a nice weapon," Four said.

"Thank you," she said, turning back to her target.

Sia could have easily cheated, what with the telekinesis and all, but that wouldn't help her at all. So instead she concentrated for a moment, fired, and didn't do badly at all, even if her shot was still a bit lower than she wanted.

Four stood behind her. "Do you mind?" he asked, gesturing to her arms. "I can show you where it's going a little wrong."

"Go right ahead," she told him. Though she wanted to insist the weight was where she was going wrong.

Four was immediately in teacher mode, shifting her stance slightly, then her shoulders, to make up for the weight his pistol had that her blaster didn't. "There," he said, seeming pleased.

"Do I pass inspection now?" she asked, kind of amused at the pleased-seeming.

"If you hit the target," Four replied.

"Fair enough," Sia said, focusing on the target and on keeping her stance like this before firing. And while it wasn't perfect, it was pretty close.

Four's lips quirked up. "Better."

"Not a bad weapon," she said. "I like mine better, but clearly, learning other things doesn't hurt."

"I don't want to be dependent on just the weapons I know," Four replied. "If something goes down, I want to be able to come up firing with whatever's closest."

Call him paranoid.

"That makes sense. And there's nothing like being disarmed and needing to find another weapon you can use," she agreed.

Four nodded. "I don't ever want to be vulnerable like that."

"Something tells me you should be fine," Sia said with a little smile.

Four smiled back. "I hope so, but I'm going to train anyway."

"Good," she said. "And not just because I could use someone to train with."

"It is pretty nice," Four admitted. "I trained with the other initiates, but that was always a competition."

"And there's a vast difference between training to be better than someone else, and training for the field," Sia said.

Four nodded. "In the field, you don't have to be better than everyone else, but you better be fast." He smiled. "The initiates have a paintball game every season--transfers against Dauntless born. It gets pretty competitive."
