Third Floor Common Room, Friday night

As it turned out, Johnny did, in fact, know how to throw a party for someone 1) on his own and 2) without just stealing rum from squirrels and claiming that made it a party (what the hell, amnesiac him?).

There was food, there was space for presents, there were non-alcoholic drinks, there was music, and there was no porn in the DVD player, he checked because he did not want any surprises.

With all that set up, the quick sign he put up explained it all: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARA." Whether he didn't know or didn't care that he neglected where a comma should be was up for debate.

Mara did finally settle into one place with a plate of snacks and a glass of water. She looked nervous--she'd never had a party before--and her eyes kept roaming back to the banner with her name on it.

"Happy birthday," Flick said after he'd eventually wandered over to her. "How old are you now? Twelve? Thirteen?"

Kidding, kidding.

Mara threw a piece of popcorn at his forehead. "I'm fifteen, thank you very much."

"My mistake," Flick told her, snagging the popcorn and tossing it into his mouth. "Fifteen. Big number."

It was making his almost nineteen year old self feel old.

"Big plans for the big one five?"

"You're looking at it," Mara said with a little grin. "I hadn't even planned this much."

"Aww, just shows you much your roommate seems to love you," Flick said, snickering. "That or he's trying to get good guy points from you."

"So is this how they celebrate birthday's on your world?" Barry asked. "Or is there some bizarre ritual we have to perform to celebrate your coming of age?"

"I can make up a bizarre ritual if you'd like," Mara said, "but I've never really celebrated a birthday before today."

"That blows," Barry said sympathetically. "Did Johnny know that? Because he should have upped his fucking game if this was your first birthday party."

"Yeah, it's all downhill after fourteen," Mara said. "No one tell Ysanne Isard."

Face shivered, only partially for effect. "Careful, she might hear you and make you sit on her lap."

Mara shuddered. "It'd be like cuddling a sarlaac."

"Or worse." Definitely worse. He was speaking from experience here.

"Having fun so far?" Johnny checked. As party host and friend and roommate and whatever else, Johnny felt it was important to check in regularly throughout the night.

"Very much so," Mara said, beaming at him. "Thank you for this. Really."

"It's he least I could do. I'm just sorry The party missed your actual birthday by a few days," Johnny said.

Mara waved a hand. "With the difference in galaxies, it's probably a rounding error anyway."

"In that case, great job, me," Johnny said. "But seriously, I'm glad you're having a good time. You deserve it. And all of the presents hat come with it."

"Hey, happy birthday," Travis said, stopping by when it seemed like Mara was free. "Having a good one so far? I'm sad to see there's no birthday hat."

"There could be a birthday hat?" Mara replied, looking dubious. "No one has mentioned a hat."

"You haven't been introduced to the glory of the birthday hat?" Travis asked, grinning. "The birthday hat is the best part! It's amazingly stylish."

No, it wasn't.

Mara arched her eyebrows. "I'm sure."
