Dorm Lobby, Monday, All Day

It was time to set up the table to sell Homecoming tickets again, and this year's theme was Glitter Punk. Alana still didn't know what it meant, exactly, but after looking up pictures online she'd decided to wear a Ramones t-shirt, black jeans and heavy boots to match the theme, with purple glitter sprayed through her hair that itched her scalp a bit but looked awesome.

She played Candy Crush on her phone in between ticket sales. Someday she'd beat the 100th level and move on, but today showed no signs of being that day.

She's got tickets! Tickets for you!

Nathan didn't have classes today so most of his day was probably going to be sent in the preserve. On his way out, he stopped at the desk that was set up in the lobby and glanced around questioningly.

Eventually, he got up the courage to step forward and ask, "What's this for?"

Oh, hey, an actual person she could help! Alana was glad to have the break from phone games.

"Homecoming," she explained, snapping her gum. "The school has some big dance this time every year, and StuCo gets to sell tickets for it. Therefore, table."

As if to prove it, she gestured to the ticket roll and cash box on the table before her.

"I don't think homecoming's actually a thing most other places, but it's one here."

"Homecoming?" Nathan repeated, brow furrowing while he tried to remember if he'd heard the word before. He came to the conclusion that he had not. "Who's coming home?"

It seemed like a logical question to him, at least.

"Alumni come back for the weekend," Alana said, not seeming to find the question odd at all. She'd probably asked, or at least thought, the same thing the first time she heard the term. "I guess school gets to be home for it 'cause we stay here?"

"Oh." That made a little more sense though he was still mostly confused. "And there's a celebration with a dance? Can anyone go? Or is it restricted to certain people?"

"Anybody at the school, yeah," Alana nodded. "You should go if you can. It's a pretty fun night. There's music and food and even this part where you vote for royalty. I got to be queen of the sophomores last year."

Not that she was bragging, except that she sort of was.

"Royalty?" Nathan asked, frowning again. "Like a monarchy of the school?"

"Only if dancing while some doofy song plays counts as royal powers now," Alana assured him. "It's symbolic or something. But I got a tiara out of it, so that was pretty cool."

Nathan rubbed the back of his neck and looked down at the tickets again. "That actually doesn't sound unlike any of the parties that people have had in the dorms. Just with a different name. And...royalty."

"Not really," Alana agreed. "Except that we dress up. And there's more glitter and better music."

"Dress up?" Nathan winced but shook his head, getting that expression off his face. "That might be a problem. For me, at least. Hmm."

He chewed his lower lip. "I guess I'll be able to find something cheap around here."

"You could probably borrow something," Alana offered quickly, feeling a little bad she'd brought it up. "Or just wear whatever you normally wear. You look fine. It's kind of hard to be a Fashion Don't in Fandom."

"Okay," Nathan said, nodding. "I'll go ahead and buy one."

He didn't want to assume and buy two just in case but he made a mental note to mention this to Anders.

"Nothing to lose."

"Absolutely not," Alana agreed, reaching to hand him the ticket. (If she had any particular thoughts on one vs. two tickets, she kept them to herself.) "Even if you hate it, you can just ditch the party early and be home in time for Samsons reruns."

"We'll see," he said, paying for the ticket and tucking it into his pocket. "Thank you for your help. Suppose I'll see you there."

"Probably," Alana agreed with a smile. "I'll make sure to say hi."

"Okay," he said, nodding and smiling at her. "Thanks again."

With that, he headed off and out to the preserve to figure out this Homecoming thing.

"Hey, Alana, question for you," Johnny said as he made his way over. "Should I get one ticket or two?"

Was that his doofus cool guy way if asking if she wanted to go with him? Yes, it was.

Alana looked at him out of the corner of one eye. She thought she knew what he was getting at, but if she was wrong ...

"Just one for you," she said slowly. "But ... well, I haven't bought mine yet."

And that was her doofus cool girl way of accepting.

"In that case, I'll save you some trouble and take care of it for you," Johnny said, pulling out his wallet. "Two, please. But you do get to keep one of them."

Alana smiled at him. "Thank you, Mr. Storm," she said, reaching out her hand for the cash. "Y'know, I was sophomore queen last year. Hope going with past royalty doesn't intimidate you."

"That's pretty intense, but I think I can manage it," Johnny said. "As long as you're cool going with future royalty."

Braggily super confident. How unlike him!

Completely unlike him!

"I'll live through it," Alana said dryly. "And hey, maybe they'll acknowledge the inevitable and elect us together. Unless they're just way too jealous."

"You definitely have my vote. I'm sure things will work out," Johnny suggsted with a smirk.

"They usually do," Alana smirked back. "How have you been, anyhow? Did you like the trip Saturday?"

"Yeah it was fun. I've done DC in my world before, but never with a bunch of people my own age," Johnny said.

"I'd never been, but it was nice," Alana told him. "Good weather. Pretty buildings. Science museum was sort of baby stuff, though."

"I'd try to stand up for the stuff there, but I grew up around so much crazy science that put all of that stuff to shame, and I didn't care about any of it then, either," Johnny said with a shrug. "Unless the thing can teleport me somewhere or fly somewhere crazy fast, meh."

"Uh-huh," Alana agreed, twirling a bit of hair. "Hey,do you think Portalocity counts as teleporting? I always figured teleporting would be less annoying."

"The way I understand it, going through a doorway or a portal isn't technically teleporting. It's only teleporting if your molecules are exploded and put together at the same second somewhere else," Johnny said. "But that was probably just somebody ranting and being wrong. Like I said, I didn't pay close enough attention."

"It sounds sciencey enough to me," Alana told him. "Which is probably not saying a whole lot."
