Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday night

It was time for a quiet night in for once, Johnny figured. He'd been out a lot recently, mostly not even doing fun things. Well, superheroing was fun, but not fun. You knew what he meant. He hadn't taken a night to just enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Speaking of simple, not only was The Buonarroti Cipher on TV, it also had commercials, which helped break up the stupidity. He was as excited as somebody could possibly be for catching a several year old so so movie based on a book he had no desire to read on basic cable.

So he plopped down on the couch, ordered some pizza, and got to enjoying Tom Hanks try to take any of this seriously.

[OOC: Hi, I haven't posted a CR in what seems like forever. I blame Fall.]

Cosette had a book under her arm and had been intending to settle in on the common room couch to read, but she was perfectly willing to roll with it when she found the common room already occupied and the television on.

"Good evening, Johnny! Oh, is this a good movie?" she asked cheerfully as she took a seat, laying her book down beside her.

"Good seems to be largely a matter of opinion when it comes to this sort of thing, I've found," Cosette said thoughtfully. "I'll consider myself satisfied if it amuses us well enough for an hour or two. Have you seen this one before?"
wildandbrave: (Determined ("There's so little I know"))

And that was the magic word that made Cosette light up with three times more interest. "Oh! There's a book about it?"

Cosette, no.

"That isn't real Latin," Cosette chided, teasing. "But I shall take your point into consideration. "I may read them anyway, just to see, but I promise I will do so with caution."

"If you say so." That was completely Cosette's 'I'm indulging you and making sure you know it' tone of voice. "Should congratulations be in order, now that you've successfully revived a dead language?"

"I suppose that would have to do," Cosette said with mock resignation, "seeing as I haven't enough time to make you some sort of trophy. Or a cake. I'm not sure what sort of cake would be appropriate for that kind of celebration anyhow."

Cosette, assuming he meant in the abstract, nodded thoughtfully. "I'll make sure to make chocolate cake for you for next time then, how's that?"

No, it would not have a dancing girl in it.

"I didn't realize you were asking," Cosette admitted, "but if that's so I wouldn't turn you down. I should warn you I'm not much good at it, though."

[OOC: No worries!]

"Yes, and I shall hold you to that," Cosette informed him. Granted, she still didn't have a totally concrete idea of what exactly 'being a gentleman' implied but she got the general gist of it.

"I visit my father on the mainland often, on weekends," Cosette answered, and even if she knew that might not be a cool thing to admit she didn't care. "But I won't be this week, as he's away on business of some sort. He won't tell me what kind."

Oh, that wacky escaped-convict secrecy.

"So yes, I suppose that means I am."

[[Sigh, the cat has been demanding attention all night and keeps knocking things over if I try to do anything else . . .]]

Well, if you asked that one police inspector . . .

"As am I. It will be something new," Cosette said cheerfully. Indicating her clearly nowhere near modern outfit, she added, "I shall have to find out what to wear, or I'm likely to draw attention to our poor dancing skills."

Kaylin still found television fascinating and more than a little perplexing. "Is this real or one of the made-up things?" she asked curiously from the doorway.

Why was she on the third floor? Who could say?

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Kaylin considered that for a moment. "Good. I think. I can't say I ever worried about the... David statue? I don't even know who he is."

She watched a moment longer. "How can you tell when a television thing is real and when it isn't? It all seems pretty unbelievable to me."

Kaylin laughed, which made her look much more her age. "This is the first time I've seen him, so I'm guessing that won't be much help."

"I'm not terribly good with rules," Kaylin admitted. "Unless I need to know them to be a Hawk. But I'm good with faces, so it won't be hard to remember his."
notamascot: (Happy)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you're making them up," she said, instantly feeling much better. "I thought - well, never mind. I shall try to remember your guidelines. Anything that helps me understand this odd world is appreciated."
notamascot: (Happy)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Kaylin grinned again. "I wouldn't read it anyway. Reading is something I've only just learned and I don't do it any more than I have to."

Sorry, Cosette, if you're listening.

"We don't have anything like that in Elantra either. None of your newspaper things. If something happens word gets around pretty quickly."

Her forehead furrowed as she considered. "I'm not sure we have any celebrities. Those are really famous people, right? Well, there are always rich people or those well known for exploits in battle, of course."

"I can hardly tell myself half the time," Cosette told her, commiserating.
notamascot: (Pensive)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"It's very odd, isn't it?" Kaylin said. "So much here doesn't seem to make sense."
wildandbrave: (Cautious (The Robbery))

[personal profile] wildandbrave 2014-11-13 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
"At first, no. No, it certainly doesn't," agreed Cosette. "There's so much to get used to, all at once! I've nearly been here a year, and I'm certain I haven't figured out half of it yet."
notamascot: (Default)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm glad to hear it's not just me," Kaylin said honestly. "It's so strange. Most things seem so much more advanced than back home, but then, they don't use magic for things. Back home even the poorest people have magical lights and such."
wildandbrave: (Thoughtful - Biting Lip)

[personal profile] wildandbrave 2014-11-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think we've got magic at all in my world," said Cosette, and yes, she sounded a little bit sad about that. "But I sometimes still feel as though electricity and all the inventions they've come up with since my time may as well be magic. Is it very commonplace where you come from?"
notamascot: (Don't Wanna)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
"I've never seen anything like electricity," Kaylin said. "But magic, yes. That's how our lights work and the mirrors we use to communicate and store records. And there are many many people who can do magic. Some only a little and some a great deal."
wildandbrave: (Thinking (In My Life))

[personal profile] wildandbrave 2014-11-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"That sounds delightful!" exclaimed Cosette. "It's a good thing we've magic enough here on the island, or I imagine you might have felt even more lost when you first arrived, going from that place to one without any magic at all."
notamascot: (Don't Wanna)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-13 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"It actually makes my skin itch," Kaylin admitted. "It's nice not having to constantly use magical door wards - those things don't like me at all."
wildandbrave: (Thoughtful - Biting Lip)

[personal profile] wildandbrave 2014-11-14 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Cosette gave her an apologetic look for assuming. "It sounded like such an exciting idea, it never occurred to me that it might not agree with you. But then, it doesn't sound like much fun to be at odds with doors."
notamascot: (Default)

[personal profile] notamascot 2014-11-15 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I guess I can see why you'd find it exciting," Kaylin said. "It is handy at times, but it's so normal to me that I don't think too much about it, unless it's the bigger stuff. I don't know why it bothers me so much. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else."
