Ronan missed his car. It used to be so easy to stomp his way out of Monmouth and get into the BMW and take off. He could find a drag race somewhere outside of town and take the money of every single child that showed up and then come back with Gansey none the wiser.

Gansey had always known though. But, that wasn't really possible here. The room was too small to stay in so Ronan had reluctantly come down to the common room to see what was going on. He flipped on the television but didn't pay any attention to it.

Nope, he was there to see what he could find for Chainsaw, the black raven that was currently sitting on his shoulder. Chainsaw seemed to be taken with new surroundings but not enough to fly away.

"What do you want?" Ronan asked in a voice that was a lot softer than the one he usually used. "Hungry?"

Chainsaw squawked, "Kerah," which was her name for Ronan and flapped her fingers.

"Okay, let's find something."

The kitchen seemed to be decently stocked so he'd just steal something for the both of them.

"Actually, a bunch of guys showed up trying to kinda sorta take over the island a little while after I got here, though I think they might've been corporate, not government. They were hunting for something in the preserve. We kicked them out."

It was all rather a bit more complicated than that, but Raven figured she had the gist of it.

"We're good at that sort of thing."

"Of course you did." He chewed on his lower lip and scratched idly at his shoulder. "Didn't know I'd gotten booted to such a popular place. I'm overwhelmed."

He was not.

"Well, we're just that nifty." That's right, Ronan, nifty. "But don't worry, we usually only get invaded maybe once a semester or so."

"And you guys win and the bad guys just crawl back to where they came from?" he asked, just checking to make sure he'd parsed what she'd just told him. He ignored nifty.

"So far, yeah," Raven said. "There are a lot of talented people on this island." She tilted her head. "So what about you? You don't seem super thrilled to be here. What brings you to Fandom?"

"Piss someone off back home." That wasn't a lie. He was fine with telling people that he lived for pissing Declan off. But thoughts of Declan led to thoughts of Matthew and he --

-- pushed that down. Matthew was hidden behind an iron wall in his head.

"So they sent you here? Sounds like you might've lucked out on the punishment front." Unless it meant he had to leave behind someone really important. She was still trying to balance his grump with optimism, though, so she didn't mention that.

"That remains to be seen." No matter how much he'd hid it and told Gansey that leaving was totally cool, he still didn't much care for it. "But I was sent here, yeah. It was either here or a monastery."

That had never been an option.

"I chose the one that let me wear my own clothes."

"Probably a good plan," Raven agreed. "And here you definitely don't have to make any vows of chastity or silence."

"So, a typical high school, then," Ronan noted with a slightly lifted eyebrow. "Sex and loud noise."

"And not a required math class in sight."

"Nerds don't protest that?" Be nice, Ronan.

"They're too busy inventing time machines in their secret workshops," Raven said. "We don't do things by half."

"So, adults aren't even needed here is what you're telling me," Ronan gathered.

"They teach the classes?" Raven said with a shrug. "And run some of the businesses in town. And usually help out when things invade."

"Oh right, the town where the streets are too small for cars," he said sourly. "That town. Sounds happening."

"Ghosts don't really need cars," Raven said. "And the carnival didn't seem to put out by the roads, either." She shrugged. "I like it. Even when it seems like it's trying to kill me. But if it's not your style, I guess you could always change your mind about that monastery."

"Monastery's even less my style then this place," he grumbled, shaking his head. "I don't look good in burlap. Ghosts might not need cars -- "

Noah didn't need one.

" -- but I do. Waste being parked like it is."

"You could take it across the causeway?"

"Yeah." He knew he could. It wasn't like he raced right in Henrietta proper. He tended to have to look for his races. "I'll probably do that. I am not riding around in those little wagons I've seen about."

"Then you're going to do a lot of walking," Raven said. "They can be useful if you need to get all the way across the island in a hurry."
