Saturday found Kathy in a much better mood than she'd been in previous days. Enough so that rather than staying in the room she shared with Raven (who had curled up smaller than Kathy had ever seen her under her blankets in the night) and finishing off the last of the cereal in sulky silence, Kathy had decided to head to the common room to make a real breakfast. French toast, she was thinking. With--hey! A package of bacon in the fridge that needed to be used within the next day or so. Excellent! And some gaeran tost-u to make it really feel like breakfast at home.

Oooh. There was honey. She could make honey-butter! For the regular toast!

She put the TV on for some quiet background noise (was Crying Breakfast Friends playing on EVERY channel?) as she bustled around the kitchen making a hearty breakfast for herself--and maybe even a bit to share if others showed.

[Open for incoming kids! Though with SP warning as there's a sleep and a wedding to get to. Warning: - possible tw for child abuse mentions in this Dante, folks.]

Raven had a very light schedule in the middle of the week these days -- which was good, because it turned out that taking correspondence courses was much more work than she'd expected. She'd totally thought Kathy was just extra-nerdy! But Raven had to keep on top of her online classes constantly if she wanted to keep her grades up, and no way was she going to tell Kathy she was failing.

It seemed like most of what Raven did was so she didn't have to tell someone she cared about that she was failing.

She'd spent most of the day inside studying -- anatomy especially was hard! All those latin names! Why did humans have to have so many bones? -- and as night fell, decided she needed a break and headed for the roof. It was gorgeous out, pleasantly breezy on Raven's scales, and she lounged against the edge of the garden area and looked out over the lights of the town.

Yeah, spending all day inside studying meant she hadn't noticed that this sort of behavior would lead to singing, today.

Lyriiiics )

Well. At least this time she wasn't singing about secretly being an animal.

[one expected, but also emo roof is open!]

So...coed slumber party! Kathy had finally decided to stop stressing over it and just throw the stupid party. Sure, A Sunday was a weird time for a slumber party, but since it was the start of break week, she figured it could work. So her morning was spent hanging up handwavy posters advising everyone in the dorms that there would be a party that night, and her afternoon was busy with party prep.

Not that there was a whole lot of setup required. It wasn't a birthday party or anything, so Kathy had skipped out on balloons and streamers and stuff like that. Mostly she just made sure that the common room was clean, that there was a Rock Band and a karaoke setup available, and plenty of places for people to sleep when the 'slumber' part of the slumber party happened. If it happened. She didn't really know what to expect.

Okay, so what made for a good party? Food? She had a bunch of snacks out, lots of different kinds of chips and sweets from JGoB. Also, she'd set up deliveries from Ching Tai and Pizza Planet for later in the evening, so no one would be hungry. Drinks? She had plenty of soda and juice, and both the non-alcoholic punch and the totally-alcoholic Jell-o shots were chilling nicely in the fridge. Music? Right, her iPod was plugged into speakers and shuffling through her Party playlist. What else could a party possibly need?

People. Right. Parties definitely needed people. Well, hopefully they'd show up, either because of the posters or lured in by music and the smell of food. It was the end of summer. What better time for a party could there be?

[OCD up and party open!]

Raven leaned back on the couch, a bowl of popcorn on her lap, and stared perplexedly at the television. For some reason, the only thing it wanted to show today was some show about sobbing food. Right now, a crying spoon was trying to comfort a crying pear. Or possibly the spoon was trying to apologize to the pear? It was hard to tell. But it was on every channel.

"I don't understand this show at all."

It was safe to say that a dwarf that was presented with a building challenge was a motivated dwarf. That would be why Thorin was halfway through building the so called 'yurt' with only a few, ah, embellishments.

Look, he needed to make it more defensible, okay?

And maybe there were a few decorative touches added to the walls.

Just be glad he didnt feel the need to add a wall around it. Yet.

During class on Wednesday, Kathy and Raven had decided to have a Revengers marathon. They probably wouldn't get through all of them, considering there were almost twenty hours of film to get through, but they could at least watch the first three or four (maybe even five?) without going stir-crazy.

With her only class of the day canceled, Kathy came right back to her room, grabbed her laptop to plug into the TV so they could watch the movies on a decent-sized screen, and put in an order for a ridiculous number of pizzas and sodas to be delivered. They'd need to keep their strength up somehow during the marathon, wouldn't they? Superhero movies, pizza, soda, and Raven was bringing the popcorn--what a great way to start the weekend!

It was spring. Okay, not the warmest spring day ever, but the trees were coating themselves (and everything else) in green and Raven was nearly done with her classes for the semester, and that was good enough for her to be stretched out on one of the chairs on the deck with a pitcher of Arnold Palmer and a novel, mimicking a nice pair of shorts and a checkered blouse tied off just above her navel.

Why, yes, she did look rather like a pin-up girl. That was pretty much the point.

Raven had made a good headway into reading do we meta Frankenstein? when she finally figured out what had been niggling at her for the last couple of days.

She'd completely forgotten to find Mavis's number and let her know about Drac.

Oooooops.

She immediately jumped up, grabbed her phone and left her a message, blissfully unaware of the phone weirdness that redirected her call three different ways. Satisfied that she had at least gotten Mavis the message that something had happened, she slouched back into the common room couch, grabbed a few more potato chips from the giant bag she'd found in the pantry, and went back to her reading.

Anders had gone to J,GOB's for breakfast and ordered one (1) donut.

The beleaguered young man behind the counter took the order, handed Anders his chocolate frosted -- and followed it with a box of assorted pastries so large it was awkward to handle.

"I didn't order this," Anders said, opening the box to poke at the contents. Not that he was opposed to free food, exactly, but it seemed unsporting to take it without some protest.

"I know," the clerk explained. "But the pizza and Chinese places keep giving away extra food, so my boss says we have to do the same to compete. Tell your friends."

"All ... right?" Anders said, and took the box back to the dorms before the baker could come to his senses. He started a pot of coffee in the common room kitchen, and, by way of a general announcement, shouted into the halls, "THEY GAVE ME FREE DONUTS IF ANYONE WANTS THEM."

That definitely counted as his good deed for the day, so he plopped down in front of the television, not paying much attention to what was on it, and began trying to make his way through as much of the box as he could manage. He didn't want them to go stale.

There was a sign that said "NO BOYS ALLOWED" on the entrance, but how harshly that would be enforced would probably be dependent on how tolerant said Boys were of manicures, rom-coms, make-up, hairstyle fun, and jumping into the ball pit.

What Gwen was learning was that even if you went back on that "I'm better than my hormones" bit this week, it didn't matter if you thought you fixed everything, it came back. So when marched into the common room ready to be grouchy and hate everything some more... and she walked into a party.

There was food spread out, and music playing, and weirdly the furniture had been moved so that a clear circle could be formed around a bottle laying in the middle of the floor. That was sexily ominous.

[Welcome to Spin the Bottle! It's an open CR, so you can totally come to watch and not play, but if you're playing, here are the rules:
If you're playing, ping into the sign in with the number in which you got there. That'll be your number for matches, which will be listed in a separate thread. If you didn't sign up, you're still totally welcome to play, and anyone who pings in later than 18 will be matched with someone already in the pool, so they might get kissed more than once.
Now play ball! ...um not dirty.]

The power was still out, it was still cold, and there was something in the air. Johnny could do something about two of those things in the common room, adding a little more light and heat to the room by letting flame dance across his shoulders. Granted, being in public when he was feeling slightly hornier than usual was probably a bad idea.

But whatever, he could entertain himself without hooking up with anyone. Not like that. Don't be gross. He was making shadow puppets on the wall. Right now he was doing deformed rabbit. It was his favorite.

The trouble with going around everywhere shapeshifted into having clothes was that you tended to get a little grimy, leading to more showers than your average teenage girl tended to go for. So it was that she ended up spending her Saturday evening steaming up the bathroom. Hey, she didn't really get cold, but that didn't mean her muscles didn't love a good blast of hot water now and then.

She shifted out of habit as she stepped out, and seeing no one else in the bathroom just yet, took her time looking over her usual disguise in the mirror, trying to decide if she wanted to make any adjustments. Maybe add a mole or a birthmark somewhere? Normal people didn't have perfectly clear skin all over, after all. She fluffed her blonde hair a little, making a pouty face at the mirror, then reached up to wipe a little more steam from the surface.

"I wish I could just look like this all the time."

She let out a sigh and relaxed.

Nothing happened.

She was still blonde.

"Oh my god." She grinned at her reflection, rubbing her arms (so smooth!) and waggled her blonde eyebrows at herself. "Oh my god, I'm normal!" She bounced on her toes -- then froze and frowned. "Wait." She tried to shift to her big beefy man look. Nothing happened. She tried to change her hair to brown. Nothing happened.

"Oh my god," she said again, eyes going wide in the mirror. "Oh god, I'm normal." She tugged her too small towel around herself and looked down at it. "Oh god. I don't have any clothes."

She peered out of the bathroom. Her room wasn't that far. She could make it without traumatizing anyone too much, right?

It was a little chilly out, sure, but nothing really awful, and Jalian was frankly tired of being indoors. So her last trip to the mainland, she'd liberated a tarpaulin, and now she was setting it down to avoid any wet ground or melted snow, and was doing stretches in the sun.

She hadn't yet decided between running through exercises and working on the temporal math of this place, so she'd brought a towel and a tablet, and had set them down next to her.

One week plus and Ronan still hadn't made it off the island. For some reason, he wasn't even that surprised. Just bored. And maybe a little lonely but he would never, ever admit that. Not in a million years.

There had been thirty seven messages on his phone this morning. He returned one from Adam but that was it. The rest got ignored. After classes, he'd scooped up Chainsaw and padded his way down to the common room. It was cold and wet outside, not really appropriate weather to go racing in but he'd thought about.

Maybe he'd go later, after he had some food and was bored enough to eat his own hand. Not yet, though. He found some potato chips in the cabinet and was setting them on the back of the couch, watching Chainsaw pretend she was sneaky by wandering completely around the chip until she thought Ronan wasn't look and she took it.

Dumb bird.

Ronan missed his car. It used to be so easy to stomp his way out of Monmouth and get into the BMW and take off. He could find a drag race somewhere outside of town and take the money of every single child that showed up and then come back with Gansey none the wiser.

Gansey had always known though. But, that wasn't really possible here. The room was too small to stay in so Ronan had reluctantly come down to the common room to see what was going on. He flipped on the television but didn't pay any attention to it.

Nope, he was there to see what he could find for Chainsaw, the black raven that was currently sitting on his shoulder. Chainsaw seemed to be taken with new surroundings but not enough to fly away.

"What do you want?" Ronan asked in a voice that was a lot softer than the one he usually used. "Hungry?"

Chainsaw squawked, "Kerah," which was her name for Ronan and flapped her fingers.

"Okay, let's find something."

The kitchen seemed to be decently stocked so he'd just steal something for the both of them.

When Gwen got here a semester ago, she quickly found out how weird the place was... and then kept finding out how much weirder the place was than she thought. So she decided to do the new kids a solid, and that was why there was a huge sheet of butcher block paper taped up on the wall between the girls' and boys' bathrooms.

THINGS ALL NEW KIDS SHOULD KNOW

Somewhere under that, she'd written:

Sometimes you turn into a dude if you're a girl, or a girl if you're a dude.
Sometimes people are from space.
Or alternate universes.
The janitor's an actual troll but he'll give you paper for stuff like this if you ask for it.

Get to adding to it, students.

Okay, so it was a little bit on the cool side out, today. And overcast. And . . . damp. Raven was not the sort to be put off by any weather! It just mean that she was mimicking a fluffy sweater instead of a sundress. Paired up with oddly scaly looking blue leggings (those were totally leggings. Who would hang out on the deck pantsless?), some fluffy socks, and a big thermos of hot cocoa, Raven was totally set for a nice quiet classless afternoon reading dystopian YA fiction.

No wonder the future didn't have any flying cars. At some point, the whole culture had decided it had to be all gritty and dark.

The future was weird.

There were two reasons for the party being organized in the second floor common room tonight. The official one was that Sparkle and Alana were both campaigning for seats on the Student Council and needed to get their names out there.

The less official one was that Minako's fifth floor party the week before had been amazing, and the hosts wanted to prove other floors could host something just about as awesome.

Other than the VOTE FOR ALANA and VOTE FOR SPARKLE posters taped to the walls, the set-up was standard for a dorm party. They'd filled a table with pizza and snacks (including, at Sparkle's insistence, homemade sparkler-topped cupcakes), and Alana had set up her tablet to play a mix of trancey pop music. The electronica battled for ear space with an intentionally campy sci-fi movie playing on the TV.

Everyone in the student body had gotten an emailed invitation, so now it was just a matter of seeing who would show up.

There was little in this world (or her own) that Raven enjoyed more than a proper lazy summer vacation day, and she intended to make full use of the break from workshops. It'd been awhile since she'd taken advantage of the dorm's deck, but she was out in force, this afternoon, sporting a cute little blue strapless suit and a pair of actual, for real sunglasses, sipping iced tea -- she had a whole pitcher, if anyone wanted to share -- and generally enjoying the warm air.

Okay, so it was actually kind of cloudy, today. And Charles had sent her a giant stack of books, which he was fussing about getting her opinion on -- though why he thought she'd want to read Bradbury or Burroughs when there were future books she could be reading, she wasn't sure -- so she was doing a bit less sunbathing than flipping disconsolately through a book about book burning, of all things, but the spirit of it remained the same.

She'd get her revenge. She was already planning the care package, full of dub-step and softcore housewife porn. And maybe some Margaret Atwood, just so he didn't think living in the future was totally rotting her brain.

Sometime about mid-morning, a vent in the third floor common room was nosed open from behind by a large, blue snake with bright golden eyes.

Raven slithered out, pausing to make sure the room was empty before making her way into the kitchen. Once there, she morphed back into her natural form and started grabbing food.

Soup cans. Bags of chips. Boxes of sugary cereal. She held a carrot -- complete with greenery still attached -- in her mouth as she debated grabbing an entire bag of potatoes. No way to cook them in the vents, she decided, and too awkward to drag around. She threw everything she could into a couple of plastic grocery bags covered in dust and lint.

She had to move quickly. There was no telling when someone would get back and discover her there, stealing food.

Cecil hadn't slept this poorly in ages. Whatever it was in his head - and it sounded like a nervous cocktail party whispering all over - had kept waking him up. Finally, he gave up and stumbled out to the common room for some coffee and cereal.

And maybe some bad TV. He couldn't really concentrate enough to listen to something good on the radio.

It had actually taken Raven a little while to realize that something had gone terribly wrong this morning. A few minutes in which she had hidden in a stall in the bathroom, staring into a compact mirror and cursing as she tried to make herself look like anything other than her natural blue scaley self.

She'd then spent another half and hour in said bathroom stall attempting the calming and meditation techniques Charles had taught her in order to try to regain control over her ability.

It wasn't working. She'd completely lost her ability to shift.

This had led to rushing back to her room in a flurry, grabbing the only pair of jeans she owned, her formal gloves, and -- at a loss for a top that provided the proper coverage -- one of Chuck's hooded sweatshirts and pulled them all on before anyone could see her in her blue glory.

Now? Now, hood pulled up to shadow her face as much as possible, she was raiding the common room kitchen for food before looking for somewhere to hide. Maybe she'd try to find Dracula. He had some limited shapeshifting abilities, maybe he could advise her? He'd at least make sure no one tried to kill her, right?

She muttered a flurry of very unladylike words as she grabbed an entire loaf of bread and attempted to cram it into her purse.

She was going to need a bigger bag.

Cecil didn't have any classes today, so he was splitting his time between writing passionate e-mail messages to ♥Carlos♥, walking around a lot, and feeding Foucault. Who seemed to need an awful lot of food, but he supposed that was normal for a growing...well, whatever he was.

At the moment, he was in the common room, trying to scrounge fish and shrimp, since Carlos had suggested Foucault looked closest to a flamingo, and the little guy did seem to like the stuff. Foucault was waddling and flapping about the counter, squeaking adorably.

As much as Raven enjoyed watching modern television (and there was so much of it to watch!), she'd found herself missing the old days of listening to the radio. She and Charles used to listen to all the old radio plays when they were little, right after Raven first came to live with him, usually followed by some positively epic games of Pretend on the Xaviers' massive estate (Raven was very good at playing pretend). So she'd been thrilled to discover podcasts, especially the one that claimed to be the favorite "new time podcast in the style of old time radio". Sure, she didn't always get all the jokes, and she had no idea who any of the stars they announced were, but the stories brought her right back to her childhood.

Plus, it was much easier to flip through fashion magazines and shopping websites while she listened, which was what she was up to, now, stretched out on the couch with her feet up, all while listening to the adventures of absurd war heroes and space cowboys.

Raven was, once again, technically lounging around the dorms naked, though to anyone looking, she seemed to be wearing a cute Esther Williams styled one piece in an usual, textured shade of dark blue. The day had turned out to be sunny and pleasantly hot, and she was taking full advantage of the chance to get in some sunbathing, warnings of the importance of sunblock having gone right past her fifties-minded love of a good tan. She had a tall glass of iced tea on the table beside her, and a mint new (and though she didn't realize it, first edition) copy of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison open in her lap, though she wasn't really reading it, just now. She was focused instead on the grounds out past the edge of the deck, watching the shadows of the leaves play across the grass.

The only way this would be better, she decided, other than not being signed up for classes that required her to splash around in the mud, would be if Charles were around, too. She missed having him around to tease, and it would be so good to have someone she could actually look like herself around without having to worry about him reacting badly to it. Well, violently. Charles wasn't exactly a fan of her blue shape, but at least he never ran screaming from it.

Raven sighed, putting on a pair of sunglasses -- she could mimic them, sure, but not well enough to actually shield her eyes -- and tilting her face further into the sun. Maybe she'd show Anya sometime. She had at least already heard of mutants.

It'd been a week on the island and nothing catastrophic had happened yet. Theo wasn't sure if he wanted to call that a win but it wasn't a bad start. Thom and Kiori had been amused by the antics of the island and they were already trying to find time to come out there. Things back home were...the same. His friends were keeping Dr. Brockton up to date on his progress and his parents were...off at another seminar.

Of course.

"Cartoons!" Dev bellowed, making Theo outwardly wince at the volume. "We never get to watch cartoons!"

"That's because there's nothing of value in them, Dev," Ange said, rubbing her head like the long suffering Elysian that she was. "There are so many better things to watch."

"There's value in that they're funny," Dev growled, almost pouting. "What do you want to watch? Something about plants?"

"Well, plants are qu -- "

"NO!"

"Cut it out!" Theo snapped, rubbing his temple and frowning. "We're just not going to watch anything!"

And with that, Theo stabbed the remote control and shut the television off. So, now he was just sitting in the common room with the television off and two arguing entities in his head.

His first foray into a common room had gone so well!

After getting thoroughly drenched and rather spattered with watermelon bits in class today -- that crinoline was never going to be the same -- Raven came back to the dorms in search of a shower, and decided to forgo her still-mostly-packed clothes in favor of shifting into an outfit right out of the shower. This meant that she could go for an outfit that wouldn't look quite so out of place in this futuristic (to her, at least) world.

It also meant that she was technically lounging around the common room naked, but it wasn't like anyone could tell.

She'd spent the last few days picking out all the things that the future didn't have -- flying cars, colonies on Mars, a cure for the common cold, all meals in pill form -- so now she was looking for some of the neat things it did. Color television! With all sorts of different people on it! Some of them had brightly colored hair! And there were women playing doctors and lawyers and police officers and even soldiers and things!

For a girl who came from a pre-second wave feminism world, this was remarkable.
