3rd Floor Common Room | Tuesday Afternoon

One week plus and Ronan still hadn't made it off the island. For some reason, he wasn't even that surprised. Just bored. And maybe a little lonely but he would never, ever admit that. Not in a million years.

There had been thirty seven messages on his phone this morning. He returned one from Adam but that was it. The rest got ignored. After classes, he'd scooped up Chainsaw and padded his way down to the common room. It was cold and wet outside, not really appropriate weather to go racing in but he'd thought about.

Maybe he'd go later, after he had some food and was bored enough to eat his own hand. Not yet, though. He found some potato chips in the cabinet and was setting them on the back of the couch, watching Chainsaw pretend she was sneaky by wandering completely around the chip until she thought Ronan wasn't look and she took it.

Dumb bird.

"Not enough paint now," Jalian pointed out. "But you can do many different colors, if you want." There was plenty of room!

"When I was little, I used to think the land of gods and demons was at the end of the Big Road. I always wanted to see them. When the corvichi came, I thought they were gods at first. I was very disappointed," she said solemnly. "They weren't impressive at all."

"I don't believe in gods," Raven admitted. "They're just someone to blame."

"I think it's all semantics," Jalian said. "If someone is powerful enough, they might as well be a god. So what?" She gave Raven a curious look. "What do they get blamed for?"

"Weather patterns," Raven said. "Illnesses. Wars and tragedies. We don't want to think we did something wrong, or that sometimes people just die, so we have to blame it on some unknowable intelligence."

Jalian nodded. "Persons - humans - do enough; we don't need gods to blame. Armageddon was humans' fault, too."

"Doesn't surprise me," Raven said. "In my time, we're basically on the brink of it already."

"Do you think it will happen?" Jalian asked. "It was years before it in my timeline, and in the island's it hasn't happened at all."

"I don't know. I hope not, but . . . I haven't really known a world where people weren't fighting and terrified, you know? That can only go on so long before . . . boom."

"People will always be stupid," Jalian agreed. "I hope your timeline lasts, though." It seemed the polite thing to say.
