Third Floor Common Room [Sunday afternoon]

Mara, freshly showered from her daily workout, stopped into the common room for a snack...and stopped, mesmorized by the costumes on the television.

"No one can ever, ever tell the Queens of Naboo about this," she said, sitting down to watch Miss Argentina arrive on stage. "What is this?"

Anyone want to explain Miss Universe to a girl from another galaxy?

"Where are you from?" Mara said, waving her hand at the television. "Maybe I'll get to see your traditional costume soon."

"Virginia." Not too exotic. "Boring club scene."

"So you dance too?" Mara replied, smiling.

"I can dance." He shrugged. "I just don't tend to dance. Don't see a real point when there's other things that could occupy my time."

"What do you go to clubs for if it's not to dance?" Mara asked earnestly.

Sometimes she was painfully fifteen.

"Ambiance," he said dryly, raising an eyebrow like he didn't believe she wouldn't know.

"You like noisy and sometimes slightly sticky?" Mara made a little face. "I'd hate to be your roommate."

"Seems like someone's been to some interesting clubs," he retorted with a raised eyebrow. "Been around a lot of sticky people to know that for a fact, Mara?"

"Yes," Mara said, wrinkling up her nose. "Senators are gross and wrinkly and old."

"So, get away from them," Ronan said like it was that simple. "Find someone to dance around who isn't gross and wrinkly and old."

"I don't have a choice with who I ask," Mara replied.

"Pretty sure everyone has a choice," he said dryly. "There's always an option C out there."

"Yes, but that option has me homeless and without a job, soo....no," Mara said. "It's not like I dance with the Senators every day."

"Can't get another job?" he asked, sounding a little disbelieving of that fact. "Do they only have dancer jobs where you're from or something? Sounds positively enthralling."

Or not.

"Not one that answers directly to the Emperor, who's paying for my education here," Mara said. "I like the other parts of my job fine."

"If you can call this an education," he snorted, rolling his eyes. "More like a sideshow in a circus."

"Well, I'm certainly learning things," Mara replied, smiling. "What classes are you in?"

"Ethics and developing a personal style," he told her, shrugging. "Neither are my cup of tea."

School wasn't his cup of tea, though. "Waste of time."

"You don't need ethics?" Mara replied, another smile on her face.

"I don't need anything." He was firm on that point. Well, he thought he was. "Why are you smiling like that? It's getting kind of creepy."

"You're amusing, that's all," Mara said. "So you're going to go through life with no ethics and no style just to be spiteful?"

Ronan narrowed his eyes.

"I didn't say that," he retorted. "I just don't need people trying to teach it to me. I know enough on my own."

"Really," Mara said. "Then why are you still here?"

"Ambiance," he repeated, smiling to show that that was most definitely not the reason. He had them but he wasn't sharing especially since it wasn't that godforsaken truth day anymore.

Mara snickered. "Sure," she said.
