Dorm lawn, Thursday afternoon

It was a little chilly out, sure, but nothing really awful, and Jalian was frankly tired of being indoors. So her last trip to the mainland, she'd liberated a tarpaulin, and now she was setting it down to avoid any wet ground or melted snow, and was doing stretches in the sun.

She hadn't yet decided between running through exercises and working on the temporal math of this place, so she'd brought a towel and a tablet, and had set them down next to her.

It was a touch windy out for Raven's tastes -- not that that hat was going to blow away or anything, but still, you think having hair blow in your face is annoying? -- but it was quite sunny, and Raven was enjoying it as she walked back to the dorms. She paused to watch Jalian for a few moments.

"Sunbathing works better when you're relaxing," she said teasingly.

"It also works better without clothes," Jalian said, grinning and rolling her eyes, "but people here get upset."

Raven rolled her eyes. "I know." Oh come on, now, Raven, you would blush like crazy the first time you actually saw someone else going around naked. "It's just so silly. I could understand if they were just sympathetically cold or something, but then why can't we be naked in the summer?"

"It makes no sense," Jalian agreed. "Have they never seen bodies before?" She snickered. "I'm tempted to do it anyway, but maybe I'll wait for spring, at least."

[tigerundercover]

"If nothing else, there'd be more people outside to see it."

[kenselvren]

Jalian shrugged. "It's a little cold now anyway. We should have more beach parties when it's warmer, though!"

"And windy," Raven said. "I don't think anyone will complain about a good beach party though. If they do, we'll just laugh at them."

"And bury them in sand!" Jalian suggested cheerfully.

"Were you the other person wanting nudity on that sign?" she asked. She'd wondered who else had good sense.

[tigerundercover]

"It was a little selfish," Raven admitted. "If I wear clothes, I can't shift as easily."

[kenselvren]

"If I could look like anything, I wouldn't wear clothes, either," Jalian said. "Much more efficient." She snickered. "Your hat does look a little silly like that, though."

Raven huffed a sigh and shifted back to a bareheaded look. "I was trying too hard to fit in, I suppose. Plenty of other students here don't wear hats even when it's cold."

"What about a smooth hat?" Jalian suggested. "Something that doesn't stick out."

[tigerundercover]

"What, like a pillbox? Or a cloche?" Raven's world didn't have a lot of beanies in it.

[kenselvren]

"Or one of those...woven ones." Jalian gestured to illustrate a plain knit hat. "What are a pillbox and a cloche?" Her world didn't have a lot of high fashion.

[tigerundercover]

"All pillbox is a little boxy hat that sits on top of your head," Raven said, and demonstrated, deciding to skip the little veil many of them had for simplicity's sake. "And a cloche is sort of slouchy one with a brim that comes way down over your eyebrows." She gave herself a bob and bee-stung lips to go with that one. "Hats are fun."

"I like that one!" Jalian said. "It's very pretty."

[tigerundercover]

"It is!" Raven agreed. "But I sometimes wish the brim were see-through."

Ladies' hats were essentially the opposite of functional.

"Can you make it see-through?" Jalian asked curiously.

[tigerundercover]

"Yeah, but then it wouldn't look like a cute hat any more."

[kenselvren]

Jalian thought about it, and remembered the corvichi. "Could you make it sort of lacy?" She interlocked her fingers in front of her face. "Very tiny pieces, so it would look solid, but you could see out?"

Raven frowned. "Do you have a picture?" She'd always been better with a good visual.

"No." Jalian tried to think of something similar. "Like the wire in some windows. Only maybe fancier." Since it was a hat.
