The Gym: Wednesday Afternoon

Dipper decided today to do something healthy. Like work out with the weight machine to try to perform a bench press.

It wasn't working well. He could barely push the bar up.

If one listen closely, they could hear him mutter "Stupid. Noodle. Arms."

Hopefully no one else would be around to witness his humiliation.

"I've never seen anyone carrying groceries," Kathy said with a shrug. "And there are never any angry letters from people who are upset that their milk or ice cream or eggs are gone or whatever. So, either the people we live with are all as rich a Croesus and don't mind having all of their food devoured by hungry classmates, or there's something more going on."

She shot Dipper a wry smile. "Honestly, knowing what I do about human nature and how weird this island gets, my money's on the mysterious food service."

"Innnnnteresting..."

Dipper was pondering now and resisting every urge to run over to his backpack and start documenting the details he'd been given so far.

"You know this island has so many mysterious and weird things going on here. Has anyone ever tried to document them at all?"

"Before or after it drove them mad?" Kathy asked, sliding down into a split so she could start stretching her hamstrings. "Seriously? I don't know. I think it's one of those things that sort of defies understanding and logic so most people just give up. Where would you even start?"

"Really? People have gone crazy because of this place?" Dipper asked with his eyes widening. "I mean, I get there's a lot of weird but legitimately crazy?"

He had half an urge to go down to the dump to see if Old Man McGucket was there.

"I actually tried to figure out one mystery here," he admitted. "But it kind of ended badly."

"Not, like, carted off by guys in white coats crazy," Kathy amended hastily. "I don't know if anyone's been driven legitimately crazy on the island."

Though she had heard of one girl who'd reacted so badly to her first gender swap, she'd needed to be sedated by a friend. But that could just be rumors.

"You did? Was that the Youtube thing mentioned on the radio? What happened?"

Dipper frowned. Why did he bring that up?

"There was a moose. The less said the better."

He shivered and made a noise of revulsion.

"The office moose?" Kathy asked, as if such a thing were perfectly normal and to be expected at a school.

He let out a small embarassed cough. "Yep. That's the one. So! You say people weren't driven legitimately crazy but maybe slightly crazy. Anyone in particular or just everyone in general?"

Yes. That was his attempt to smoothly change the topic. It wasn't that smooth.

It was about as smooth as sandpaper. Rated coarse.

"Pretty much just everyone," Kathy said. "You go through one or two genders changes and have to babysit your potential offspring from the future and you're bound to go a little bit nuts."

Dipper raised an eyebrow at that one. He went over to his backpack and pulled out his journal again and opened up to a blank page. "Gender changes?" he asked. "And babysitting your own kids from the future? So there are time portals here too?"

He was going to have to check to make sure the Time Baby never sent any of it's squads back here.

"All sorts," Kathy said, intrigued--and amused, she couldn't lie--about his notebook. "We have students from different times and different worlds here. Ichabod's from before the Revolutionary War, Celia's from, I think, the Victorian Era. I'm not sure when Cosette's from--1860's, maybe? I'm not great at IDing her gowns. Raven's from the 50's, my little brother, Joker, who just graduated, is from very far in the future, when humanity's colonized a lot of space. And then there are people, like Anders and Cassandra, who come from different worlds entirely, and people like you and me, who come from Earth but from very different Earths."

"I met somebody not from our time but I didn't realize it was so widespread," Dipper said as he took some notes. "Just out of curiosity, you haven't run into a giant Time Baby or a Time Paradox Avoidance Enforcement Squadron have you?"

"A what and a who?" Kathy asked. "Uhh, no? Or, if I did, they were under a different name entirely."

Dipper shook his head dismissively. "Don't worry about it. You wouldn't have noticed them if you had seen them. In my world these are guys from the future who don't like timelines being messed with."

It's hard to miss a giant floating baby with a glowing hourglass on his forehead.

"No wonder they don't come to Fandom," Kathy snorted. "This place would probably drive them insane.

"Yeeeeeaaaaah," he said drawing out the word. "They're... interesting. I'm just hoping that's an alternative timeline. Then again by that time I'll be long dead so there's really nothing I can do about it."

"It's hard to say," Kathy said with a nod, thinking back to the few details of the weekend she could remember. "There's no good way to tell one from the other until you get there. Why? What's so bad about them?"
