Third floor common room, Friday afternoon

Raven leaned back on the couch, a bowl of popcorn on her lap, and stared perplexedly at the television. For some reason, the only thing it wanted to show today was some show about sobbing food. Right now, a crying spoon was trying to comfort a crying pear. Or possibly the spoon was trying to apologize to the pear? It was hard to tell. But it was on every channel.

"I don't understand this show at all."

"Is that animated food crying?" Jasper asked after he'd taken a few steps into the common room and noticed what was on the television. "Did someone try and eat it?"

What else could food be upset about?

"Not as far as I can tell," Raven said. "It seems like the world is made up entirely of sobbing breakfast food and utensils."

"Interesting," Jasper commented, glancing at the crying food for a second longer before shaking his head. He walked over to the small kitchen area to fill a glass with water. "Didn't know you were a fan of sobbing food."

Of course, he knew very little about her so not a weird thing to know television preferences.

"There is literally nothing else on." And god forbid she should, you know, not watch television.

"That could mean a few things here," Jasper said, leaning against the counter casually. "Either there is other crap on other channels but it's on the same quality level as this or this television is only playing that show on every channel."

Raven flipped through a few channels, resulting in small bursts of static between shots of a sobbing waffle. "The second," she said. "I'm trying to decide if it means something."

It probably didn't.

Jasper glanced around the room, expecting to see sobbing fruit popping up or something. He hadn't been on the island long but he'd come to expect oddities. It made his own inner turmoil a little less dark sometimes.

"If my food starts crying tomorrow, I'm gonna be really upset."

"I imagine most people would be," Raven agreed. "But at least it'll probably only happen at breakfast."

Jasper shook his head and finished his water before washing the glass and putting it away. At least that hadn't started crying at him.

"Place is weird," he muttered, leaning back against the counter and crossing his arms. "Weird and full of a lot of freaking downtime. Maybe the TV's trying to make everyone get another hobby?"

Kathy recognized Jasper from class, but this was the first time she'd ever had a chance to really talk to him. "Hey," she said with a small wave. "Jasper, right? You a fan of..." She sent another skeptical glance towards the screen. "...Crying Breakfast Friends?"

"Not really," he said, shaking his head. "Just passing by and stopped in for a drink of water. Crying food isn't really my thing."

"...Especially since they're not doing anything but crying," Kathy said, peering at the screen as if she could figure out the cartoon just by staring hard enough at it. "I remember cartoons being better than this, don't you?"

"Never watched them." They hadn't been especially important in the Dent household. He'd been too busy doing chores or setting up Billy's trophy room.

"Oh wow," Kathy said. "And I thought my parents were strict about TV watching growing up. No TV at all growing up, or just not cartoons?"

"Didn't really have the time," he replied, shrugging. "My dad traveled a lot."

That was true with connotations of a lie wrapped up in it.

"Oh," Kathy nodded. "And then there's me, who grew up in the first apartment my parents moved into when they came to America."

Jasper shrugged a shoulder. "I got by fine without cartoons. Just means I have more to see for the first time now. Not a big deal. I had books. Music. That kind of thing."

He had other, far more disturbing things as well but that wasn't really good for casual conversation.

Kathy heard crying and ducked her head into the common room. "Hey is everyone--Raven, what the heck are you watching?"

"A fried egg and a waffle crying over their friend the milk carton," Raven said. "Sooooo. I don't actually know."

"...Why?"

Why were they crying? Why was she watching it? So many questions summed up in one word.

"It's the only thing on," Raven said. "I'm trying to decide if it's a message of some sort."

"Is it National Read A Book Weekend or something?" Kathy asked. "Because ye gods, this is terrible.""

"Not that I know of?" Raven shrugged. "Maybe the TV is tired of people trying to watch it."

"But why? Shouldn't it be glad to be fulfilling its...ultimate purpose?" Kathy asked. "I have no idea how to explain TV psychology."

"Maybe it feels unappreciated. Taken for granted. Maybe it secretly wishes it were a movie screen."
