1st Floor Rec Room, Monday Evening

'Somehow' (Kathy was blaming Dante), dinner at El Burrito Loco had involved not one but several alcoholic flights for them to share: it had started with a cerveza flight with appetizers, turned into a sangria flight before their entrees had come out, and finished up with a tequila flight right before they'd finished eating. It was the tequila flight that had done it; they had been just fine after the sangria, but the shots of tequila, even when divided between the three of them, had sent them right over the edge from 'pleasantly buzzed' to 'gigglng and tipsy.'

The trip home hadn't sobered them up much, which was why they'd somehow ended up in the first floor Rec Room instead of heading up the stairs to the third floor. It was also why the discovery of a fully-functioning karaoke machine was pounced on with delight. Normally, Kathy would have been all over the DDR machine in the corner, but karaoke was a much, much better idea--for one thing, there was far less movement involved.

"We are doing this," she informed the guys, plugging the machine in and pulling out the track listings. There were an insane number of tracks from all over the world. Kathy was shocked to find songs listed by prominent K- and J-Pop artists, as well as the standard fare of Broadway, 50s ballads, and 70's rock. "We are absolutely doing this. In fact, Dante, I challenge you to an 80s power ballad-off right now."

The first floor of the Dorms was in for a very long, very musical night.

Tall boots and a short skirt were always an excellent combination, whether you were just planning on going out for dinner or needed to fucking kill it at karaoke in retaliation for Ebony and Ivory.

Was there a rap in the middle of that song? Yes, yes there was. Looks like all that practice singing along with Nicki paid off as she strutted around around and didn't miss a beat, finally coming to stand right between Dante's legs and groove while she sang.

Ohhh, man. For a second Dante thought of Kathy's sister, who still thought she was all-nerd all-the-time. This'd probably make her head explode.

"Somebody's auditioning for a music video," he said, looking up.

And down.

Look, he was sluggish and drunk, not blind.

"I thought it was a movie about pizza delivery," Kathy teased, turning around so he could get another view of all that dancing--and then lightly springing away before he could get any ideas.

Scratch that, this was Dante. He already had ideas. She was springing away before he could act on them.

Besides, she had to get back to her chair and finish off the song by showing off her voice. And her legs.

Yeah, okay, mostly the legs.

She had good legs. Dante couldn't blame her.

He let out a soft snicker and sank further back into his own chair.

Kathy grinned at him and took a bow. "And that, Pooky, is how we do karaoke where I come from," she announced.

"The strip club?" Dante asked.

Innocently.

"What's your obsession with me working in clubs, huh?" Kathy asked, putting on another song that had caught her eye. "Strip clubs, fetish clubs--I know there was another time you mentioned a club I should work in. Wishful thinking?"

"More like waiting until you finally crack and admit that what you really wanna do is take pole dancing lessons," Dante said, amused.

"Didn't you once mention renting the stripper pole suite just to see what I could do?" Kathy asked.

No, Kath. He'd suggested breaking into it for a night. But close!

She dropped into a pose. "It's just strength, moves, and a bit of rhythm, isn't it? I could do that if I wanted to." She'd had to memorize a bunch of routines for gymnastics. Surely it couldn't be much different!

...And so long as she kept thinking of it as an athletic sport, she might even be able to get through it without a freakout!

"It's pole dancing," Dante said.

Like, that was all he had to say, right?

"And you're point is...?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Fortunately Dante was spared answering because the words to the next song came on and suddenly she was pointing at him. "Oh, I! I just died in your arms tonight!"

Dante blinked.

Then he burst out laughing. "Seriously?" he called. "Aw, hell, Kathy."

She shrugged at him, completely unrepentant. She'd challenged him to 80s power ballads, hadn't she? Well, here one was!

"It must have been something you said," she sang, pointing accusingly at him. "I just died in your arms tonight!"

Now Dante had to get out of his seat and wander over there. "Not yet," he supplied.

Kathy waggled her eyebrows at him. That might also be on the agenda, yes.

...Depending on how awake they managed to stay after karaoke.

"I keep looking for something I can't get. Broken hearts, they're all around me and I don't see an easier way to get out of this," she sand through the amazingly cheesy 80s synth of it all. "Her diary sits by the bedside table.
The curtains are closed, the cat's in the cradle. Who would have thought that a girl like me could come to this?"

Dante had no microphone yet, but he was gonna contribute a hearty, "I just died in your arms tonight!" anyway.

Because what this song needed was more sarcasm.

Right, because anyone in the room expected Dante to sing 80s love ballads with sincerity.

"It must have been something you said! I just died in your arms tonight!" And was Kathy draping herself over him again? Of course! She was dead in his arms! The song made that point very clear. "Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight! It must have been some kind of kiss..."

Hey, he could do it with sincerity! ... If he was even drunker than he was now!

... He'd still not mean it, but it'd sound vaguely sincere!

Right now Dante was too distracted by her draping herself, though. He wrapped an arm around her to hold her up theatrically. "Some kind of kiss," he mused. "Don't think I ever realized how dirty this song is."

"I should have walked away!" Kathy said, sliding from his grip and dancing around to his other side. "I should have walked away!"

In the instrumental break, she leaned close to whisper in his ear, "I've lain limp in your arms after a few of your kisses." She was pretty sure he knew the type she was talking about. Then she bit him on his neck and spun into the next verse.

"Is there any just cause for feeling like this? On the surface I'm a name on a list. I try to be discreet but then blow it again!"

Kathy, there was nothing discreet about that expression.

Dante found that wall he'd been leaning against earlier and... leaned against it again. His half-hearted plans to get in on the singing had kinda been dashed now.

Why interrupt a good show?

Awww! Well, he could always join her for the chorus? Because sarcastically singing Dante was fun!

"I've lost and found it's my final mistake--she's loving by proxy, no give and all take!" Like her food, Dante. Like her goddamn food!

"'Cause I've been thrilled to fantasy, one too many times..." she sang, trailing a finger down the front of his shirt. This line was true enough anyway.

Dante laughed softly, and screw it, he'd dip in for the chorus, sure.

"Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight," he sang, "It must've been some kind of kiss--!"

He winked at her. Of course he did.

Of course he did. She also fully expected Dante to steal the first few lines of the next verse from her when he saw what they were.

"I just died in your arms tonight!" Oh, how had she ended up flung against him again? WHAT A MYSTERY? "Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight. It must have been some kind of kiss." And she was stealing another kiss from him, one that was half-bite. "I should have walked away! I should have walked away!"

Dante was too busy smirking into that nice, bitey kiss to realize there were new lyrics on screen.

He did steal the lines, but he was at least half a beat late as he sang, "It was a long hot night." He snagged her by her behind and added, "She made it easy, she made it feel right..."

"But now it's over, the moment has gone--I followed my hands to my head, I know I was wrong!" And she was slipping away, out of his grasp once more, staying just out of reach.

Nuh-uh, Dante. Couldn't catch her. Not once she was gone!
