Dorm roof, Tuesday afternoon
It was a particularly gorgeous day out, and Tip didn't have any classes or work or anything she needed to get done. She did have a care package from home, full of snacks from Mom's current grocery store (which included basically anything that would stand up to being dipped or coated in dark chocolate), a case of birch beer, and the world's ugliest belt, courtesy of J.Lo.
She was absolutely rocking that ugly ass belt, thank you. She was also munching on chocolate covered edamame and flipping through the paperback her mom had sent her (a cheesy looking YA romance about gay dragons, excellent) and kicking her feet out into the open air in a manner that would probably make anyone afraid of heights moan and cringe. Rihanna was playing on her phone, the sun was shining on her face, and all was right and pleasant in the world.

"Oh. Hi!" he said with a little wave. "Mind if I hang out up here?"

"It's not... like a chocolate covered bug or anything is it?"

"Good afternoon," she greeted the other girl.

She had more than enough to spare. Tip's mom was reacting to their separation by overdoing it on the comfort foods.

moddablechocolate covered things. "You're Lucille, right?"She'd always been pretty good at names. The ones she had the physiology to pronounce, anyway.

She walked over to stand by Tip at the edge of the roof and enjoy the view.

That was to say, she'd gotten herself a book of ABCs. And by 'gotten,' she'd walked into the Turtle and Canary, had asked for assistance finding something that could help her in her quest to master this particular written language, and had walked out again with her prize without even considering that she might have to pay for it.
Ah well.
Now she was making her way up to the roof with the book in hand, squinting at the pages. The first letter was for... some manner of human flying machine. The second was for a... smallish Earth creature with leathery wings. The third was for... one of the Earth vehicles with the four round appendages...
In hindsight, she thought, squinting as she paced back and forth across the rooftop, this acquisition would have been far more useful if she had any idea what any of those images were meant to represent.

"Apparently so," she agreed. "I'm told it's meant to be a teaching aid for those wanting to learn how to read your language. Just match the pictures up with the word, and that's meant to help you associate the sounds with the letters. But," and she gave the book a shake, "I'm not familiar with anything in the pictures, either!"
Just that a lot of those things seemed to be flying. The machine, the hairy mammal thing, a human with some manner of cloth attached to his shoulders...

It'd been easier with J.Lo. He'd had a whole ESL thing going on, but he'd had pre-invasion training. His grammar was occasionally hilarious, but his vocabulary wasn't bad at all.

Still, she nodded at the girl. "Hello."

"Hey," she nodded back. "No knives this time, huh?"

"Good," she said. "It's a nice one, today." She tilted her head. ". . . Which is admittedly a nice trick, since we're no where near our actual sun right now."

"Hello," she echoed, barely glancing up from her studies. She was on 'S is for Star,' which was one of the few pictures in the book that she could place readily. And the letters that followed the S actually made sense. None of those strangely random silent ones to be seen.

The entirety of her name didn't seem to go over well with the locals, so she'd started to shorten it. Then again, this particular human seemed to have a lengthy title, herself. Peridot lowered her book and looked thoughtfully at her.
"And you're another student. One who has been here a while, I assume?"
