It had been a good day, with the library books being quiet and the cooking class being enjoyable as usual. Would Dr Lecter ever come up with something she didn't find interesting? Well, the eating of people wasn't to her taste, but besides that?

Making the evening as pleasant as the day had been, Lucille had braved the television and managed to find a channel broadcasting a performance of La Bohème, and with a pot of tea and sandwiches she settled in on the couch to watch.

[Common room is open. Lucille will hate you if you turn off the opera.]

"...what are you watching?"

The look Lucille gave him said clearly what she thought about someone who the first time he opened his mouth in her presence expressed a very poor taste in music.

"La Bohème."

Hey. He braved the upper echelons of Hyperion. He'd seen worse. Sort of. His old boss made kittens fight to the death at least. And there was always Jack.

"Ooookay," he said, clearly judging her back as he headed to the fridge.

She judged him back again. He would not be offered tea.

"I take it your taste in music is more vernacular."

Rude! Unless it was poisoned tea. In which case... good.

"Vernacular?" Rhys asked with a laugh that, let's be honest here, pretty condescending.

Lucille was out of poison right now.

"If you are of a different opinion you may of course object." She would judge him anyway.

"No, no. Just... kind of a five dollar word, isn't it?" And he was a jerk. A useless noodle with a heart of gold, but still kind of a jerk.

"I am sorry if I underestimated your education," Lucille lied, smiling insincerely.

Rhys narrowed his eyes at that, sense that he was being insulted tingling. "Right," he said, reaching for the cupboard handle while not looking away from her. It would have been cool if he hadn't missed the first couple attempts.

"Is it hard to find what you are looking for?" Lucille asked in response to the fumbling with cupboards, her gaze on the tv screen.

"No." Yes. Yes, it was.

"Well, cupboards can be complicated. They don't have them where you are from?"

If asked Lucille would claim that was a reasonable question.

"Oh, ha ha," Rhys replied, rolling his eye as he successfully got a glass and filled it with water. "Hilarious."

"Apologies for insulting your home."

Note that Lucille didn't apologize for insulting Rhys, or that she didn't sound particularly apologetic.

That was almost homey and familiar for him.

"Where are you from anyway?"

"England in 1888," Lucille replied, truthfully this time. "And yourself?"

"So, really in the past?" Rhys ventured slowly. "You wouldn't have heard of Pandora, I guess."

"I assume you don't mean the lady with the famous box," Lucille replied with a light shrug.

"No, it's a planet. It's a planet where everything wants to murder you." So maybe she'd feel at home!

Lucille preferred it when she did the murdering. She took a sip of her tea. "Why do they want to murder you."

Yes, the misinterpretation was deliberate.

"Because they're all psychos," Rhys muttered. "It was a prison planet at first. And the local wildlife is... well, dangerous is sort of an understatement."

"I assume you find this island more pleasant then," Lucille replied.

"My roommate is Kuzco." If that meant anything to her. Because it meant so much annoyance for him.

"I haven't met Cuzco."

"He's loud and awful and thinks he's an emperor." And Rhys was clearly better than that.
