The Deck, Saturday Morning

The weather had gotten drearier over the past few weeks, and that suited Aloy just fine. Too much sunshine wasn't good for the land - regardless of what the people of this time did to keep the food and drinks flowing freely.

No, a rainy morning was fine. She'd been tinkering on something that might be a step towards plugging herself into the portal system for a while now. She took the device, a mess of wires and two skillfully autopsied phones, and sat down with it on the porch.

Her Focus was on, showing her a multitude of facts about the device she was working on, and helping her block out the world.

Tinker, tinker...

Jaylah had grown very used to the weather on this planet as it was and now it went and changed on her. Also, it was possible that she just needed to get out more to experience it.

No, scratch that. Definitely needed to get out more.

"What are you doing?" Hellos were for other people.

Aloy had answered that question multiple times today, so you'd have to excuse her sigh.

"Engineering," she said. "Or trying to, anyway."

She squinted at the remains of the communication devices for a moment longer before nodding as she accepted the answer given. "An engineer then."

Jaylah approved! Weren't you glad, Aloy?

"I wouldn't call myself that," Aloy said. "I just... like to know how to make things work."

"An engineer," Jaylah confirmed, working firmly off the description from Montgomery Scotty. "I will be one as well."

"You're learning how to work with machines?" Aloy prompted.

"I know how to work with machines," Jaylah replied, lounging back in one of the chairs on the deck. "But I must go to their academy once I have finished here."

"There's an academy?" Aloy echoed like this was a dialogue wheel interrogation choice.

Jaylah nodded, kicking her foot like a cat flicking it's tail impatiently. "In a place called San Francisco."

"So... what is it and why do you want to go there?" Aloy asked, because she was having a hard time figuring it out.

"It is meant to prepare me for joining their Star Fleet, but I would do fine without it." Sure. That was a thing that might be true. "I am assured it is worth the effort."

That part was true. She wanted to see what else lay out there in the stars now that she was free to do so.

"Star Fleet," Aloy echoed thoughtfully. "Like ships that can go into the sky? Professor Skywalker has talked about them."

Jaylah nodded along with that assessment. "That exactly. Into the sky and into space beyond."

Lana glanced at the new arrival curiously. She looked almost Rattataki, except for the hair. "Good morning."

"It is morning," Jaylah granted her in her usual blunt manner, a little head bob of agreement with that statement. "Good or not."

"It is," Lana agreed. "I'm Lana Beniko. And you are?"

"Lana Beniko," she repeated, getting a feel for the words in her mouth. "I am Jaylah."

"Jaylah." Lana nodded. "It's a pleasure to meet you.

Which would always throw Jaylah off a little, but by now she was becoming used to the strange lies people told each other on this planet to be 'polite'.

"Are you new?" she went with instead of returning the sentiment.

Lana was used to politeness, but she couldn't sense any hostility from Jaylah, so she wrote it off as a cultural difference.

"I am, yes. Are you?"

She just was a socially awkward, semi-feral scrapper from shitty, shitty murder planet!

"Yes. My time here has only been a number of the local months."

Lana nodded. "Where are you from?" If Jaylah preferred blunt simplicity, she could do that.

At that, Jaylah scrunched her nose up. "I do not remember where my home planet is. My family was forced to crash in a nebula and I lived there until I was brought to Earth to join their Star Fleet."

Because apparently she needed some social skills. Which. Pfft. Ridiculous, right? She did just fine.

"I thought Earth didn't have space travel yet?" Lana said, confused. Then she realized. "Ah. You're from a different time, then?"

"Their future apparently. I was informed this place 'does that sometimes'." She made sure to say the last part with a huff of annoyance.
