The Deck, Saturday Morning

The weather had gotten drearier over the past few weeks, and that suited Aloy just fine. Too much sunshine wasn't good for the land - regardless of what the people of this time did to keep the food and drinks flowing freely.

No, a rainy morning was fine. She'd been tinkering on something that might be a step towards plugging herself into the portal system for a while now. She took the device, a mess of wires and two skillfully autopsied phones, and sat down with it on the porch.

Her Focus was on, showing her a multitude of facts about the device she was working on, and helping her block out the world.

Tinker, tinker...

"That's it exactly," Sidon said with a nod. "Anything electrified is a bit of a weakness; it can incapacitate us severely or, worse, lead to an instant death. I was considering a swim today, but it would be quite the risk. I realize now it's probably quite the good thing that so many others have arrived, to hold me off to sit and chat instead..."

"What about an indoor swimmingpool? Isn't there a bath somewhere too?"

Breq had actually been a little curious about that bath herself.

"But I'm happy to distract you," she added, expressionless.

"And I," Sidon said brightly, recovering quickly from the look of disgust that marked his face when Breq mentioned the swimming pool, "am quite happy to be distracted. I find that swimming pool, however, to be quite vile and atrocious. They fill it with a chemical that smells as though it were poison! I've been assured that it is quite safe and not at all toxic, but I just cannot stand it. I can feel it get into my gils, into my eyes and it burns something terrible.

"The Onsen is lovely, though, especially in the winter when the ponds and ocean are far too cold to swim in. Even if they do require swim trunks..."

And there was a long-suffering sigh that he just couldn't quite help.

"Oh, some kind of disinfectant?" Breq guessed. "It sounds like they should look for better ones. What's the Onsen like? Apart from requiring swimwear? They require that a lot here, don't they?"
