Second floor common room- Sunday afternoon

Yesterday Sabine had gone shopping, marked all her stuff with her symbol because even if it didn't keep anyone from stealing it if she ever saw it she'd know it was hers, and put everything away.

Today she went into the fridge to get a soda and...

"Come on, it hasn't even been a day!"

She was going to have to start making booby traps.

"My stuff keeps going missing, and my next step is to build really tiny paint bombs so I can find out who's doing it," she explained.

"You're sure it's not just in a different cabinet?" Lana asked, coming to help the search.

[seriesofbaddecisions]

"Positive," Sabine sighed. "But it's okay. The paint bombs will help me find out what's happening and make me feel better."

It was the little things.

Lana grinned. "Spoken like a true artist and a true Mandalorian. You could also try surveillance; there must be some method here of keeping subtle watch."

"True. But for all the time I spend trying to get the squirrels to leave me alone for a while, I'm not sure how much I want to get into that without people's permission," she said. "Unless I start paying the squirrels..."

"Whoever it was didn't ask your permission before walking off with things," Lana pointed out. "And it is a public space. But paying the squirrels is a thought."

"I think it's what I'm most comfortable with. I mean, they're already spying anyway, and I know how to talk to them."

She bribed them.

"Then you should do that," Lana agreed. "If I should see anything, I'll let you know, but I haven't so far. You put your name on everything?"

"My symbol. Basically the same thing, and more helpful to anyone who can't read the language yet," she explained.

Lana nodded. "That makes sense. That symbol?" She gestured at the one on Sabine's breastplate.

"Yep. It's like a calling card, or signing your work."

And probably by the end of her first year it would be e v e r y w h e r e.

"Good catch."

"I'm used to heraldic devices from the nobility," Lana said. "And the few Mandalorians I've seen generally have family crests. Albeit less colorful."

"It's not actually a family crest," she said evenly. "Just me."

Lana had several questions to ask about that, but she could take a hint in the feeling behind that, and instead of asking them, she nodded.

"I'll keep an eye out for it, anyway."

"Thanks," she said, and officially gave up on the search for her stuff for the moment. "So how've you been?"

"Not too bad. Two of my classes were cancelled this week, though. It left me rather at loose ends. You?"

"Decent enough. My armor got me work doing art, so that was fun. I'm keeping busy," she shrugged. "Should we be worried if two classes get canceled in week three?"

"I have no idea," Lana confessed. "It almost makes me wonder what the instructors are up to, but they seem to be a bit less harsh here than back home."

Homicidal. The word she was looking for was less homicidal.

"I feel like any school would seem more harsh than this one," she said. "Was there anything good about your last school?"

"I learned quite a lot at the Academy on Korriban," Lana said. "I would never give it up. It's just that often we were learning by surviving the instructors' expectations, rather than by following their requests. What about you? What schooling did you have before this?"

"The Academy on Mandalore," she answered. "It sounds less intense than yours but... it was a lot."

"I would imagine it was still a lot stricter than this, though," Lana said.

"You could say that." She shrugged. "It wasn't a good fit for me, so I moved on."

"How do you like this, then?" Lana asked. "Is here a better fit?"

"So far. There's more room to move, figure things out," she admitted. "I don't understand how they do actual school here at all, but the other stuff... What about you?"
