Second floor common room, Saturday

It was a quiet day today, so Lana went to the common room and got some tea, then set up the new laptop computer she'd just acquired and started looking up things.

Including how to get the thing to do some things it apparently didn't. Honestly, why was all the display technology here so...flat?

The TV was on in the background, but she was ignoring it.

"It's a terrible idea," Vette agreed brightly. "That's why this guy is a probe droid processor that I'm gonna try to rig up some kind of cheap probe or mouse or gonk chassis for, assuming I can even get it to function again. It was in pretty rough shape. It's no wonder it was scrapped."

"How's bringing it back to life going?" she asked, peering at it.

"I still need to swap out a lot of wiring," Vette sighed. "And there are some chips that I can't just replace using things from Earth. I don't have the tools to build those from the ground up. I'd have to go spelunking through scrap back home, I think."

She picked it up and held it out for Sabine to take a peek at.

"This stuff is probably all ancient by your standards, anyway. The dean says I'm from a few thousand years before everybody else."

Sabine took it to look it over. "And you haven't found anything comparable at the scrapyard?"

"There are some old speeder parts that might still have computer components in them," Vette mused, "and I found the chassis for an old drink-serving unit that might even be where this processor came from. But that thing is so rusted out and damaged, I picked it up and one of the arms basically crumbled."

"I'm guessing there wasn't anyone else from your time from that party?" Sabine checked. She might have an in to get parts now, but her time was probably too new for that.

"There was Lana," Vette sighed. "I think everyone else was way in the future. Except apparently that Rand guy? But he looked busy."

"It might be an option to ask one of them," Sabine suggested, holding the once and future droid out for her. "I might be able to help if they can't, but your own time should be easier to find things that work with it."

"Yeah, Chop won't let me take him apart to see if he's got any compatible bits, for some reason," Vette replied, giving a little smile that suggested that she was probably joking as she took the part back. "But if I keep having rotten junkyard luck, I'll probably ask Lana for an assist. At least I know Lana."

"Yeah. I don't actually know anything about that guy at all." Which really, was probably for the best?

Vette shrugged.

"Beats me. All I know is that he's got the really nice Dynamic-class freighter that sometimes parks on top of the MCA and I am super double extra bonus not supposed to steal that one if I want to not get dead, or something."

Which just kind of made her want to even more.

"Don't steal that one."

She felt like that should be said outright, just in case.

"I won't," Vette sighed. "I know better than to steal the ship of someone who lives in a place I intend to return to. They get testy about it."

A pause.

"Bus guy was an extenuating circumstance."

Of course.

Sabine tilted her head. "And that extenuating circumstance was...?"

Vette's smile was as sweet as sweet could be.

"We knew we could get away with it."
