Third Floor Common Room; Monday Morning [09/02].

Wayne supposed he probably could've done a better job at tellin' the new kids about Monday morning breakfast. There weren't much he could do about it now, though, except maybe hope that the girls had managed to spread a little bit of it by word of mouth, and trust in the ventilations system in here to take all those delicious aromas of a homecooked meal and spread it conveniently through the halls of the dormitory building. It'd be nice, to have some new faces join in on the tradition, realleh, so maybe he'd have to try to mention it if he wound up talking with any of them through the week, especially with classes and everything.

The fact that everything he'd picked up yesterday that he'd need was still there and exactly as it should be was a bit of a relief, and Wayne got to work, making sure each and every pancake was the fluffiest, that each slice of bacon had just the right amount of crisp, that there was more than enough coffee ready to go in the pot, and that there were more'n enough eggs to make however a person might like 'em...though he felt an odd reluctance to make too many of 'em sunny side up.

And so it was breakfast time, a good hearty meal to get yer day...and yer semester...started!

Elisabeth looked like she wasn't sure this was the best idea she'd ever had, but she nodded anyway. "Yes please," she said, holding out a glass. "How big is an elephant anyway? I've only ever read about them."

Supposedly there was a menagerie in Brassbridge, Austermeer's capital, that might have one, but Brassbridge was almost as exotic as an elephant to Elisabeth.

"Um. Well..." Lana laughed. "About as big as a bantha? I don't actually know how many kilos or anything. Two or three times as tall as a person, a bit longer than they are tall, and very heavy?"

Thinking along similar lines to Elisabeth, she added, "There's a zoo on the mainland; we should all take a trip there sometime."

"Will the wardens or whoever let us go?" Elisabeth was still not entirely clear on the vast differences between Fandom and...okay, literally anywhere, but particularly Summershall.

"You mean the school officials?" Lana guessed. "I don't think they care what we do as long as we show up to class."

They might not even care about that, but Lana wouldn't dream of skipping.

"A group of us have gone to the mainland on trips several times. Nobody seems to mind."

"Really?" Elisabeth gasped. Honestly, that seemed weirder to her than blue milk. "But who's in charge of making sure you do everything you're supposed to at the right time?"

Apprentices didn't exactly have a lot of oversight? But when they weren't where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there (or were somewhere they weren't supposed to be at all), there was a reckoning.

"Nobody, really," Lana said. "I imagine if you missed class too much, the instructor would have something to say about it, and maybe the Dean or the Principal, but the only place we really have to be is in class - we're not expected to serve the instructors or anything. Unless you volunteer to."

Yeah, this was very weird. "Then what are we supposed to spend our time doing?"

Said the girl who was not used to having large amounts of unstructured free time.

"Whatever we like," said the other girl who had also not been used to it. "I spend a lot of time in the library or on the internet, researching whatever I can. And one of the instructors will spar and meditate with me on Fridays. There are a lot of museums on the mainland, too; we've been to a few of those."
