Nighttime, outside the dorms

A trip into town had resulted in Sean getting everything a puppy could need to be happy, and many many things that he didn't need per se, but which were too damned cute to resist.

There had also been Christmas presents for the pooch, but those were safely hidden in the back of Angel's closet since lord knows he isn't hiding there where Sean couldn't find them.

Sean himself was currently sporting a red and green collar with, appropriately enough, a dog tag. On the tag it said "My name is SEAN. My dad's name is ANGEL."

Sean's new possessions were back in the room. In the meanwhile Angel could tell the signs of a puppy who wasn't yet ready to settle in for the night.

So they were outside, playing with a new ball, snow, and generally having more fun than you ever thought a broody vampire could have.

Behold the power of puppy.

Sean dug his nose into some snow, then sneezed. He seemed happy about having done so.

"Oh, my - uh - grandson?" Angel shrugged. "Guess you could say. Pain in the ass. Kind of like a cat, only loud and a thousand times more annoying."

"'Grandson'?" Logan asked, puzzled. He found a stick and tapped it on the ground to get Sean's attention. Then comprehension dawned. "Oh." He touched the recently-healed mark on his neck.

"Yeah," Angel said, quietly. "So - um - doing okay with classes?"

Sean heard the tapping. He poked his head up, barked, and ran for the stick Logan was holding. He overshot his goal by a few inches and bonked his nose on Logan's leg. This did not deter the wagging of his tail, however.

Logan scritched Sean behind the ears again and tossed the new stick. "Failed Ethics," he said with a shrug. "Still waiting to hear on Journalism. All my other teachers disappeared. You?"

"Passed Math," Angel said. He watched as Sean bolted after the stick. "Which surprised the hell out of me. I thought I was pretty dumb at it."

"Yeah? Did you do that project - the one about the locker?" Logan asked.

"Not yet," Angel said. Sean came back with the stick, this time bringing it over to Angel. Angel knelt down so he could pet Sean, apparently not caring that doing so got his pants wet. "Good boy! Who's a good boy who fetches? Okay, Sean, fetch!" Angel tossed the stick again. Then, as though that interlude hadn't just happened, Angel continued. "That might be next year. Prof. Eppes was saying he had some ideas."

"Oh, are you taking math again next semester?" Logan asked. "I haven't figured out my classes yet."

"Might be an independant study thing," Angel said. "Prof. Eppes and I were working on this extra credit project and it didn't get finished. I think I'd be lost in the advanced class, but I'd like to see the project through. Just to complete something. Show that maybe I'm - "

Angel stopped himself. Even he knew better than to say words like not dumber than Angelus. Especially around Logan.

"Um - how 'bout the holidays?" Angel asked. "Doing anything?"

"Hawai'i," Logan said. "Sun, babes and a whole lotta waves." Sean ran back with the stick and dropped it at Angel's feet, then barked at Logan. "Bring it here, dude," Logan said to the dog.

"Oh," Angel said. "That's - that's good."

Sean barked, bowing down on his two front paws. When Logan waved him over again he got the idea. He picked the stick up and ran to Logan. He dropped the stick at Logan's feet, then sat back as though to say Look what I just did!

"Good dog!" Logan said, patting him on the side. Sean gave Logan a big doggy grin. Logan picked up the stick and tossed it again. "You?" he asked Angel.

"Here," Angel said. He stood up, brushing dirt off of his pants. The action did not successfully hide the ambiguous look on his face. "John's staying too. We were gonna do a pizza and movies thing for anybody who didn't have anywhere to go. You know, low key."

"That's cool," Logan said. "I'm not really doing anything Christmasy this year. Just going to go have fun."

"I actually like Christmas," Angel said. He put his hands back into his pockets. "I normally don't get to celebrate it. Um - if your trip doesn't work out, if you get snowed in or whatever, you're welcome to join us."

Sean came back with the stick. He dropped it in front of Logan, but a couple of feet away. He gave a bark, encouraging Logan to pick it up for him.

Logan blinked and looked at Angel. "Um. Thanks. That's very... actually, it's kind of weird of you." Logan turned away from Angel and picked up the stick, but not soon enough to hide the pleased smile on his face. He tossed the stick for Sean.

Sean leapt up into the air to try to catch it. He landed with a heavy thump. He shook his head, ears flapping hard enough that they sounded like propellers, then bounded off in the stick's direction.

"Yeah, well, um," Angel cleared his throat, "who doesn't like pizza?" There was a pause. "And movies. If - if pizza's not a thing."

"I'm a fan of pizza," Logan said. "The kind with meat. Not the kind with so many vegetables that you gotta wonder why they don't just call it a salad."

"Ever have pizza with pasta on it?"

"I have not," Logan said. "Good? Bad? Scary?"

"Better than you'd give it credit for," Angel admitted. Sean came back with the stick. Angel praised him then threw it again. "Filling, though. All the carbs I guess."

Logan watched Sean pounce-grab the stick and shake it furiously. "You're not him," he said finally. It wasn't a question, just a simple statement of fact.

Angel looked startled. He stared at Logan before shaking his head. "No."

"That's going to take some getting used to."

"I get that," Angel said. He held out his hands, putting one over the other. "Imagine it with what feels like two sets of overlapping memories."
