Second floor common room, Friday

You know, there comes a point where you might as well turn semi-serious frustration/desperation into something fun.

Sure, the common rooms might be decorated for Christmas, but they didn't have mistletoe hanging from the ceiling every two feet. Now they do.

And Jaye, who is packed for home and isn't leaving for a few hours, might be sitting on a sofa watching VH1. You know. Casually.

((Will be in and out, but come on. I had to.))

The first floor is terribly quiet today, and with so many students gone home for the holidays, Archie is lonely and quite frankly bored. He's entertained brief notions of trying to find that Anders fellow that Cally insists he would get along with so well, but aside from the other night when Anders was sleeping on the couch, the boy has been damned elusive.

The second floor common room, however, does seem to be quite the popular place, so he ventures up to see if anyone is around. Even the sight of an unfamiliar face is welcome, so he's rather pleased to see Jaye there.

He does not, however, notice the ceiling.

"Oh, well enough, I suppose," replies Archie, who's still wearing his silly Santa hat. "Barring my woeful inability to find a suitable diversion today, that is. It's terribly dull and quiet with so many people gone for the holidays."

He tilts his head and eyes Jaye speculatively. "And you? Are you staying over the break, or going elsewhere?"

"You get bored?" echoes Archie, following her gesture up to the ceiling.

His expression quickly shifts from benign curiosity to outright surprise as he takes in the mistletoe-bedecked ceiling.

"Oh," he says weakly. "By god. That's, ah, impressive work."

"It's certainly festive," Archie manages, still staring at the ceiling and therefore missing out on Jaye's innocent expression.

As he soon realizes, he's standing directly underneath one of the sprigs of mistletoe.

"Yes. Well. Rather an easy feat to accomplish, given its abundance in here, isn't it?" Archie is amused, but he may be coming to the sadly belated realization that he quite literally walked right into this one.

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
"So I see," replies Archie, chuckling. "But how exactly did you plan for your, ah, enthusiastic decorating work to alleviate this boredom of yours? Now, certainly, if there were a horde of people in here, no doubt the results would play out spectacularly, but I'm afraid it's rather less effective in a sparsely populated room, isn't it?"

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I hardly noticed either," replies Archie, perching on the arm of the nearest couch. "With classes over I rarely venture out of my room, and the only reason I noticed was because it was so damned quiet. Which I suspect makes me just as pathetic."

"Not a thing except terrible hat hair by now, I expect, so you'll just have to take my word for it." Suddenly distracted, Archie stares at the television in abject horror. "By god, that was considered fashion at some point?"

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Afflicted with Trainwreck Syndrome, apparently, Archie can't stop staring at the TV. As a result, his expression only grows more horrified. "Now, when you say American history, could I safely assume these notions died trying to cross the Atlantic? Or would that be too much to ask?"

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
It should, perhaps, occur to Archie to not take her word for it.

It does not.

"Well, that's a relief at least." He pauses. "I'm terribly sorry, I never asked your name."

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Archie," he replies, doffing the Santa cap to her without thinking, and thereby proving the existence of the aforementioned hat hair. "Archie Kennedy. I suppose you're only the fourth or fifth person whose name I actually know around here now."

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"And strangely enough, you're the first meeting involving so much shrubbery," returns Archie, amused. "Particularly hanging from the ceiling, indoors."

Archie stands stunned for a moment, holding onto the remote. "Merry Christmas?" he manages to say to the now empty room.

He certainly wasn't expecting that.

But then really, no one ever really did something like this on board the Indy. More's the pity, perhaps -- it would have been funny.
