Gym - Self Defense

The set is up familiar to anyone who showed up last term. There are mats spread out on the floor and a table off to the side is holding cookie, lemonade, soda, and Vote for Alanna! posters. Alanna herself is perched on another table.

"Hey guys, welcome back to the people who were here last semester, welcom to the newbies. I'm Alanna and your person in charge for the night. Here's the deal, I have no idea how many/who is showing up tonight, so I'm just going to pare you up. One person attacks, the other tries to get away. People attacking, your hurt your person, I hurt you. No weapons, no magic. I watch, and I'll have a list of things we need to work on for next week. Okay, don't kill each other!"

"Your cat? Right. Is your cat..." Walter groped for a way to ask if her cat was a normal cat, but who knew what anyone around here thought was normal.

New subject. Good idea.

"I hear we're the only two students allowed weapons. I know why I get to keep mine." And he would not be spreading around the 'too short' excuse he'd given Agent Principal. "Why are you allowed to keep yours?"

Walter coughed at the question. "A couple of reasons. One is that it is something that requires more practice than you can get in an hour a day. It's more like a way of life."

"I think it's probably easier to sleep with the rings than a sword," Walter observed with a grin. Finally, someone who understood. "I've had to teach myself, so there's no one to give me a hard time if I don't have them, but I have enough scars, I don't need to get more by falling out of practice even a little."

Walter held out a hand and flicked his fingers, making a shimmering fall of wire dance scant centimeters above the floor. "These, used properly, can cut through just about anything." Another twitch of his fingers and the wires disappeared.

"But that's the easy part. The hard part is controlling them well enough not to cut through everything. That's what really takes the day to day work."

Walter shrugged. "There's no ancient tradition of the warriors of the monofilament wires. Maybe I'll start one. Rule one: you and your weapon are one."

"It should be." Walter nods in agreement. "But the most basic rule should be rule number one. I mean, rule number three hundred twenty seven is going to be about well-polished shoes."
