Elizabeth made herself comfortable, a pile of prom tickets besides her, and settled down for a long day.

"Janet likes...." Elizabeth began, and then trailed off. No. Not going to finish that sentence. "I'll try that," she said brightly.

"What do you mean, what's going on?" Elizabeth asked.

Elizabeth just blushed and looked down at her lap.

Sam grinned, on the scent of something now. "What?"

"Nothing," Elizabeth muttered.

Sam leaned down, serious. "Elizabeth? What's going on?"

"Nothing's going on! Really. Nothing at all," Elizabeth said, slightly flustered and her eyes wide.

Elizabeth flailed. "Janet and I are kinda, well, sorta, y'know?"

No, really. She was a diplomat...

Sam's eyes widened. "Oh. But...she and Daniel?"

"Are still she and Daniel, yes," Elizabeth said, wondering if she could hide behind her paper.

"So, are you..." Sam wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer. Her military training had been pretty ingrained. "Just don't hurt Daniel, please?"

Elizabeth was now a very nice shade of red. "We're not. Or at least trying not to. He does know," she said. Wow. Even deeper red.

"Oh. Um, okay then." Sam wasn't any less red than Elizabeth. "So, do you think I should buy tickets, or wait to see if Cameron gets them?"

"Wait and see if Cam gets them," Elizabeth said, very thankful for the change of subject. "I'd expect that he would; he's a southern gentleman when it comes to things like that."

"Right. I forgot they existed," she said, seriously. "At least I won't have to worry about him treating me badly. Plus, we're going as friends, so that takes all the pressure off."

Sam just made a face. "Yeah, because that could happen."

Elizabeth stuck her tongue out at Sam. "Hey, it could happen," she said. "Of course, the sky could start falling too, but still!"

"Actually, the sky can't fall. It's a complex equation of atmospheric pressure, gravity, circulating air currents..."

And she's off.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes and picked up the Post again after glancing at her watch. She'd give her a couple of minutes.

A few minutes later, Sam wound down, only to notice Elizabeth was reading the paper. "Oops," she said, sheepishly, "but thank you for not falling asleep like everyone else does."
