Koala Campfire, Morning

Bel found himself waking up early Monday morning because his mun had to work for some reason. He couldn't fall back asleep, so he slipped out of bed without disturbing Phoebe, got dressed, and went outside. The camp was pretty quiet so far. He settled in front of the charred remains of the Koala firepit and waited to see who might be awake and passing by.

Bel shrugged. "Guess it just depends on who is better," he said, still grinning.

"Guess so," Veronica replied. "So what are you doing up this early?"

"Couldn't sleep," he said. "Figured I would just come out here and hang out rather than wake up Phoebe."

"Aw, you're so considerate," Veronica said.

"It's just another way to atone for my evil past," Bel said solemnly.

"Coffee is a good way to do that, too," Veronica said, mimicking his solemn tone.

"Already brewing," Bel said. He disappeared into the cabin for a moment and returned with a coffee pot and several mugs.

"My hero," Veronica said in an overly melodramatic tone, holding her hands over her chest.

"How do you like it?" Bel said after going back into the cabin and producing some cream and sugar.

"Very sweet," Veronica replied. "No cream though."

Bel poured some sugar into the mug. "That enough for you?" he asked. "Or do you want some more?"

"You can never have too much sugar," Veronica said. "But that should satisfy my sweet tooth."

Bel handed her the mug and poured his own. "I take mine black," he said. "I like the harder taste -- I don't want it softened by sugar or cream."

Veronica sipped her coffee and smiled. "Well, I'll admit, there are times when strong, black coffee is all that will get me going. But most of the time, I prefer it sweet."

"I suppose something could be said for a sugar jolt along with the caffeine," Bel mused, "but I still prefer to take it strong."

Veronica hoped they were still talking about coffee.

"No two things go better together than sugar and caffeine."

Of course they were still talking about coffee. What else would they be talking about? Certainly not Angel.

"I've developed a fondness for Mountain Dew as well," Bel agreed.

"Not my favorite soda," Veronica admitted. "But I guess it's hard to beat for the caffeine factor."

"Oh yeah," Bel said. "It's like the next best thing to coffee. A good, hard jolt to the body to get it going in the morning."

"See, I'm not a big fan of hard jolts to the body first thing in the morning," Veronica said, sipping her coffee again. "I'd rather take it slow and easy, get going gradually."

Bel hoped they were still talking about coffee.

"See, that's where humans and demons differ," Bel said. "I don't want to wait, I want to feel it right away. Then again, our bodies are better equiped to handle a strong shock to the system."

"You're all about the instant gratification," Veronica said. "I think that good things are worth waiting for."

And she's not going to ask what other kind of strong shocks demons are equipped to deal with, because then they wouldn't be talking about coffee anymore.

"Demons are pretty impatient in general," Bel said. "They just want to get down to business, take things fast instead of slow."

"Well, then, I guess it makes sense that you take your coffee strong and black," Veronica said, because, yes, she decided to make sure they really were still talking about coffee.

"And we've come full circle," Bel said with a chuckle. Coffee. Right.
