Gym: Wednesday Morning

Not his usual territory, but Jack's in the gym, poking at the equipment. He's oddly attracted to the practice swords, but he's not dumb enough to try using one when he doesn't know how.

He's not exercising, he's just hanging out, but that could change.

[ooc: Open for all your gym needs! Just FYI, Jack's actually waiting for someone, and I'm on SP like woah after a few hours.]

Cedric's visits to the gym have been...well, he's been here once or twice so he's not really sure why he's here today.

Of course, once he spots Jack, he's very glad he'd ended up here.

"Up early again, are you?" Cedric says, walking over to him.

"I think it's becoming a habit," Jack replied as he left off fiddling with the swords and smiled at Cedric. "But you're right here with me." He raised an eyebrow at Cedric. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Slept enough," he replies. "I wasn't very tired anymore. Starting an exercise regime, Jack?"

"Nope, but I might be learning some self-defence." Jack walked across the gym to stand in front of Cedric. "Good morning," he said with a smile and kissed him, one hand brushing across his jaw.

"Hm. Yes, it is," he says, grinning anew. "Self defense? Hand to hand, I'm guessing?"

"Can you think of anything more appropriate?" he asked innocently, grinning back at Cedric.

"True," he say, shrugging one shoulder. "I'm sure you'll excel, as you usually do." Crossing his arms in front of him, he asks, "You might even have to teach me once you've mastered hand to hand combat."

Jack laughed. "I think mastery will be a long way off. But anything I learn, I'll be happy to show you." He touched Cedric's arm, looking at him curiously. "Do wizards need anything besides magic?"

"Intelligence. Agility. Adaptability. And courage, probably. I'm still learning a lot of those," he says. "Just in case, you know..."

Jack studied him for a moment before saying, "You already have all of those, I think." He cocked his head. "In case...?" he asked quietly.

"Wizards don't always turn out well," he says quietly. "Dark wizards and witches do happen."

Jack nodded. "I remember you said it could happen," he replied. "Any advantage you can gain, you should. And any way I can help, I will. Especially since your magic training's on hold."

"I'll tell you more at a later time," he promises. "About them. Speaking of training, it might not be completely on hold. Are you occupied tomorrow morning?"

Sam came running in, a bit late and flustered. "Hey, Jack. Sorry, I overslept."

"Hey, Sam." Grinning, he walked over to her. "Someone been keeping you up at night?"

"Got struck by inspiration in the wee hours of Sunday morning," Sam grinned back, getting out the pads. "Seems something got my creative juices flowing."

Jack eyed the pads and the grin and chuckled. "Good to know. Is your sudden inspiration anything I can help with?"

"Not at this exact moment," Sam said, handing him a set of gloves and a face protector and wondering if he'd actually wear the foam helmet. "But it's gonna be a heck of an acceptance speech someday when I win the Nobel Prize in Physics."

"That's a speech I'm going to have to hear." Jack took the gloves and face protector and put them on, then looked over at her, holding his arms out from his sides. "Sam, I place myself entirely in your hands."

Sam smirked. "Okay, first thing?" She put the face protector on, then the gloves, and put up her fists in a guard position. "Hitting. Do you know how to throw a punch?"

He mimicked her pose. "Maybe? I've hit people before, but I don't know that it was particularly effective."

"Well, hit me, and I'll see what you've got," Sam shifted her weight slightly from foot to foot.

Jack nodded, planted his feet, and drew one arm back, fist clenched, and aimed at her shoulder. It wasn't very quick though, and he swayed forward slightly.

"Okay, first thing, you need to relax your body a little," Sam told him, "the goal here is to anticipate what I'm going to do before I do it, and either counter that or do something that keeps me from doing that in the first place. It's easier if you're loose."

She studied Jack critically. "Next, I think we'll work on your punch. You'll use your back arm for this, and twist your body slightly to put some real force behind it when you make contact. Don't lock your elbow--it makes it easy to break it in a real fight."

As she'd learned the hard way, unfortunately.

"Relaxation I can do." Jack stretched his arms above his head, going up on his toes, until his back cracked, then returned to his original stance. "Loose might be a bit harsh, though." He grinned as arranged his body as instructed. "How's that?"
