Third Floor Common Room, Lunchtime

After a ~~handwavey~~ walk into town for supplies, Dawn set out a bunch of sandwich fixings, pretzels, chips of various descriptions, cookies, fruit, lemonade, iced tea, and soda.

A small handwritten sign told people to help themselves, so she didn't have to keep repeating herself.

As for Dawn, she sat down with a book to enjoy her hummus with cheese, sprouts, carrots and sweet pickles. Occasionally she sipped from her lemonade.

She rolled her eyes. "Let's just say I'm cute ninja-doll free, but I did finally manage to hit the target. They were fun, but wow a lot harder."

"So what's up with you? I haven't seen you much lately," she said, opening her sandwich and taking a pickle out to eat separately.

"Yeah, definitely harder," Sam agreed. "Unfortunately, things that need to be killed don't generally stand still and wait for you to aim. Though it would be a lot easier if they would."

He shrugged lightly, starting to fix himself a sandwich. "Not a whole lot. Oh, did Dean tell you we actually got a hold of our Dad on Sunday?"

"No, they really don't, darn it." She may have pouted, then got up and walked over to Sam. "No, he didn't. How's your dad?"

"He's good," Sam said, smiling happily. "He's working, but he sounded all right. He's actually thinking about coming to visit at some point, if he can when he's done with this job."

"Your dad's coming? Here?" Yeah, okay, that was a very strange mix of terror and wanting to smack an adult upside the head coursing through her system.

"Yeah." Sam's tone probably matched Dawn's, at least with having terror mixed in. "As much as I want to see him, I'm kind of worried about him seeing exactly how weird this place is, and deciding that Dean and I can't stay." The thought of his dad meeting Buffy and Dawn was scary too, but he didn't want to voice that.

"Would he do that? Would he really make you both leave?" She asked in a sad little voice. "Especially compared to what else you deal with, it's not that bad."

"I don't know if he would," Sam replied honestly. "It all depends on what he considers to be bad. He seemed to take the news about the mummies well."

Okay, that was one hurdle. "What about the body-switching? Not to mention whatever Alec may or may not be."

"I think he was kind of amused by the body switching. Especially after I explained about Alec being a cheerleader." Sam smirked. "And because Dean is okay. I haven't told him anything else about Alec, but I don't really know what Dean has said."

"Well, what else would there be to tell him about Alec?" Dawn asked, snagging a cookie. "And if the body swap didn't make his freak, maybe you guys will be able to stay?" She suggested, hopefully.

"I don't know if Dean mentioned to him that he wants to bring Alec home with us," Sam explained, taking another cookie.

Dawn coughed with surprise, sending a few cookie bits flying. "He wants to wh...Er, I mean, I guess that's nice of him? But doesn't Alec have a life to get back to?" She brushed at her shirt. "Um, a life that doesn't have you guys in it, I mean?"

"Finally, someone with a reasonable opinion on this." Sam was aware of the fact that his opinion wasn't exactly unbiased. "Dean said it'll be better for Alec if he comes with us, because then he won't have to worry about anyone who might want to take him back where he came from." He did his best not to sigh. "Plus, he's a good fighter, so he'll be an asset to us, or something like that."

"Okaaaay," Dawn wasn't so sure messing with the natural order on a permanent basis was a good idea, but she wasn't sure what to say about it. "You don't agree with Dean?"

"No. I don't like Alec," Sam admitted simply. "Things are hard enough with just Dean and my dad and me. Alec being around would only make things worse."

"Why?" She hopped up on the counter so she could meet his eyes. "And how would it make things worse? And for who?"

"Why don't I like him? Do you want the short version, or should I pull out the list of reasons why he's an ass?" Sam shrugged, looking down specifically so he didn't have to meet her eyes. "I know it sounds selfish, but it would make things harder for me. I don't want to go from second place to third, you know?"

"Either version, if you need to get it off your chest. Er," she tried to think of a way to rephrase, "I mean, if you need to talk about it, I'm okay listening."

"Hey," she said, leaning over, "I don't believe that you're in second place at all, but why would you drop back to third if Alec showed up?"

"It's nothing really specific," Sam said. He didn't want to lay all his complaints out, and sound like the whining brat he'd been accused of being when he was younger. "He just seems to enjoy driving me crazy. And he doesn't care about anyone but himself."

Sam sighed, and looked up a little at her. "He's a genetic superhero. He's got all these perks like special hearing and speed and sight. He's perfect for the kinds of things that my family does."

"Maybe he's jealous? I mean, he doesn't have anybody, right? You've got Dean, no matter what happens." She decided not to mention about how Alec had teased her during the body switch. It wasn't that important anyway.

"Okay, he is perfect for it," she admitted, "But they need what you do, too, right?" Even if she wasn't completely sure what that was. "I mean, doesn't the research you do tell Dean and your Dad how to kill things without getting themselves killed. That's really important, even if it's not glamorous. If they can't see that, well, they're just stupid!"

The fact that Alec could be jealous of him had never actually occured to Sam, and he just stared at Dawn for a moment while he tried to process that thought. "I guess. I never thought about it like that."

"But what if they don't need what I do?" Sam asked, sounding slightly worried. "I just...I know it's important. I know I play an important role. But I shouldn't have to fight Alec to have a role, if that makes any sense. We're a family, and Alec isn't part of it."

"They totally need what you do," Dawn said firmly, jaw set, "and if they don't? I do. Er, the Council. Needs you. Because of all the slayers who need watchers. Yes."

Trying to pretend she hadn't just stuck her foot in it, she continued in a rush, "And I know what you mean--but maybe it's just that you think you need to fight for a role, not that you actually have to?"

Sam smiled gently at Dawn. "Well, if you need me..." he said with a smirk. "What are watchers?"

He gave another shrug. "Maybe I won't have to fight. And maybe this is all a moot point, because I don't know if Alec agrees with Dean on his brilliant idea."

"Watchers are the guys and girls who guide the slayers--they tell them what they're fighting, and how to kill it. They also do a lot of reading and researching, trying to figure out portents and prophecies and stuff like that." She took another cookie and let her feet swing against the counter. "They also train the slayers in how to use weapons and strategy."

"Dean didn't talk to Alec about this?" Dawn stared at Sam. "Seriously?"
