Third Floor Common Room - Sunday Morning

After dealing with monsters and ghosts the night before, Sam had almost forgotten about his promise to Dean to help him with brunch in the morning. They'd made a run into town for more eggs, and some bacon, and Dean was busy fixing the real food while Sam made toast. It was a much safer operation that way, really.

"He's worried he won't have a place if you go with," Dawn said quietly, hoping Sam and Dean wouldn't overhear. "That Dean and his dad won't need him."

Alec sighed, and kind of wished he hadn't even mentioned it in the first place. Glancing over at Sammy, he lowered his voice a little as well. "We're kind of hoping Dean will drop it," he said, though he already knew how stubborn his double could be.

"I'm not saying you shouldn't go," Dawn tried to explain, "just..." She sighed. "I blame their dad."

"Their dad?" Alec raised his eyebrows, curious. "What about him?"

"I don't think he took very good care of Dean or Sam," Dawn said, not sure she should be telling Alec this, "and Sam had Dean, but Dean...I'm not sure he had anybody. So they competed for their dad's attention and neither one of them feel like they have a safe place."

"Er, obviously that's just my opinion."

"Dean must think it's safe if he wants to bring me there," Alec pointed out. "Though from what I hear they do, that seems like a relative kind of 'safe'."

"Yeah, well, demons are kind of unpredictible, but it's not a bad life." She thought about that. "Okay, it totally sucks and everyone you love may die, but sometimes they come back. And sometimes they don't."

Alec blinked at her. "Does this have to do with zombies?"

"Hopefully not?" Dawn stared from Alec to Dean and Sam and back again. "Didn't they explain?"

He frowned, confused a little bit moreso. "You mean about their mom?"

"It's not really the safest job," Dawn informed him matter-of-factly. "I'm sixteen, and I've already lost three people I loved to it."

Alec nodded, though still somewhat confused. "I'm not seeing an upside here."

"Go demon killing?" Dawn offered. "Making the world safe for wee tiny babies?"

She tried again. "Chicks dig scars?"

Alec shrugged. "Doesn't sound worth it."

"What would make it worth it?" Dawn asked, trying to figure out whether or not Alec really meant what he was saying.

"You only have so many loved ones, right?" Alec gave a half-shrug. "If it keeps getting them killed, do something else."

"But what if it's your destiny to save the world? A lot?"

He gave her an odd look. "'Destiny'? Who says?"

"Uh..." Dawn was stumped. "The destiny distribution people?"

"Screw 'em?" Alec frowned. "I mean, why let someone else decide what you get to do for the rest of your life, especially if you don't want to?"

"Because maybe there's something bigger than you at work?"

"If it's so big, they can find someone else who wants to do it," he said.

"Maybe the pick the person who needs to do it, whether they want to be there or not," Dawn said, taking this a little personally now.

"Why them?" He cocked his head, honestly confused and a little indignant at the idea.

"I don't know why them," Dawn hissed at Alec, "maybe they were the last ones out of the big cosmic pool. Maybe they were being saved from something infinitely worse! Did you ever think of that? That maybe there's something worse out there than losing everyone you love?"

And maybe she was that something worse.
