Dawn was stretched out on one of the couches and flipping through channels.

"Oooh, sharks."

After a few minutes, she was feeling a bit hungry, so she got up to make herself a sandwich. Any resemblance between the song she was humming and the Teeth theme song was purely coincidental.

"Decent," Tyler said. "Kicked Parker's ass in lying class. Pippi rocks. Lost at basketball, again." And that might be a smile playing around his lips, as he had noticed Nadia at the game, even if they hadn't exactly talked. "And yourself?"

"Hey." Walter smiled back and nodded to Tyler. "Why does Pippi rock? Other than the usual?"

"So in lying class," Tyler said, nodding to Nadia as he remembered, duh, she'd been in class too, "Jarod had us improvise these situations where we were in trouble and had to lie our way out of it, and it turned into this saga about zombie mooses and cell phones and silk and ..." His voice trailed off, and he shrugged. "I respect a girl who can keep a story like that straight. Pippi never blinked."

Nadia nodded. "She's good at that. I'm pretty sure I beat Joxer in that class. He kind of just flailed."

Did that during the sparring match, too. Huh.

"He seems to flail a lot," Walter interjected. "I'm not surprised Pippi did well, though. No offense to Lucas, but I'd rather have tried out your class than been forced to sing spirituals."

Tyler snickered. "You don't seem like the spirituals sort," he told Walter. Then he remembered something. "Hey, is River in that class? I haven't seen her since the game."

"I'm not the singing in public without large amounts of alcohol type," Walter said. With one notable exception.

"Yes, she's there. She sang, too, today." And had seemed mostly okay again.

Nadia made a face. "Did she bite anyone in that class?"

Tyler looked affronted. "Bite?"

"No, she didn't bite anyone," Walter said, frowning. "She seemed calm enough today."

"Well, goodie for her. I guess I'm the only one she wants to bite and kick at, then."

Yeah, Nadia hadn't quite forgiven River for that. She had just been trying to help! Wasn't her fautl River was crazy and psychic. . . .

Tyler sat up very straight and stopped paying attention to the TV. His entire focus was on Nadia.

It might be a little disconcerting. "What? Were you sparring? You were sparring with her and she, she took it too far or something?"

"She threw a knife into her painted octopus and decided it was dead. I was trying to help, and she bit me. And then she kicked me."

Tyler just stared at Nadia for a moment. He knew River was attached to her artwork, he knew she was unstable, but ...

Even at his worst, he had never hurt a person without some warning, some agreement from them to fight. Even when he didn't know what real was.

Even when he didn't know who he was.

"Did you say anything to her?" he asked, hoping. "Or think anything? That she was crazy? Because that really, really bothers her."

"I just wanted her to calm down. I said we could fix it. Give it an eyepatch or something. She hid under the table and I was trying to get her out."

"She was quite insistent that it was dead." Walter shook his head. "Nadia obviously meant well, but River didn't take it that way. I did get her to promise not to kick or bite her again, though."

Like a fucking toddler, Tyler thought. My girlfriend needs a binky and a nap.

No. that was cruel. he knew it, he knew it, he knew it, and ... he was standing. "That's something," he made himself say, voice hollow. "Thanks for telling me, guys."

And then he was walking out of the room, gritting his teeth until they squeaked.

Nadia sighed and closed her eyes. "I'm forgetting something, here, aren't I."

"Tyler and River are dating," Walter said. Or were?

"It's not your fault."

Nadia nodded. "Right. That'd be it, then."

Walter sighed and shrugged. "He has a right to know, right?"

"Yeah. I feel bad for him, not for her."

"She's always been nice when I've dealt with her, but I don't like that she hurt my-" girlfriend. No, not right. "That she hurt you when you trying to help."
